'Accuses Israel of war crimes', says the Jerusalem Post; 'possible war crimes', says UN News
Bodies are still being recovered from Gaza's rubble three years on. Four reports give the UN rights chief's response at four strengths, and none says how many bodies were found.
Three headlines, three strengths. Three of four reports put "war crimes" in the headline. One states it as an accusation.
| Outlet | Headline words | Hedge |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | "accuses Israel of war crimes" | none in the headline; the body says the rights chief "claimed" strikes "may have violated" humanitarian law |
| UN News | "points to possible war crimes" | "possible" |
| Haaretz | "suspected Gaza war crimes" | "suspected" |
| Asharq Al-Awsat | "urges access for international investigators" | no war crimes wording |
What is asked for. Asharq Al-Awsat's headline says the UN urges access for international investigators. We hold no text beneath it. Haaretz says Israeli international law scholars reject "blanket denials" and call for an independent probe. It does not say who made the denials.
The dead. UN News says Israeli bombardment flattened entire neighbourhoods, "most of them women and children". It gives no number and no source. Its sentence does not make clear whether that describes the bodies or the people who lived there. The other three reports give no count and no description.
Not settled - How many bodies have been recovered, and who they were. No report names one. - Whether the rights chief accused or warned. We hold one line of the rights chief's reported words, not the statement. - What Israel's government says. No report quotes it, or anyone in Gaza. - No Palestinian outlet is among the four reports.
What this is about: bodies are still being recovered from the ruins of Gaza, and the UN's top human rights official says what is being found may be evidence of war crimes.
How it got here - 7 October 2023: Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel, killing civilians and soldiers and taking hostages into Gaza. - The war that followed: Israel launched an air and ground campaign in Gaza, the coastal strip Hamas had governed since 2007. It said it was targeting Hamas. Whole neighbourhoods were destroyed. The toll is disputed between the parties, and we give no figure here. - 2024: a UN report found that Israeli strikes on residential buildings in the war's early weeks may have broken humanitarian law, according to the Jerusalem Post. That year the International Criminal Court also issued arrest warrants for Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defence minister, and a Hamas commander. Israel rejects the court's jurisdiction. - October 2025: a ceasefire took effect. Crews could then dig through areas that had been too dangerous to reach. Asharq Al-Awsat reports hundreds of bodies being pulled out.
The actors - Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights since 2022. His office documents abuses. It cannot prosecute anyone. - Israel's government and army. They deny committing war crimes and say Hamas fought from among civilians. Israel has kept foreign journalists and UN investigators out of Gaza. - Palestinians in Gaza, whose families are among the dead being recovered. - Israeli critics. This week Haaretz reported Israeli international law scholars calling for an independent inquiry. That followed a documentary in which, as we reported on 14 September, 24 soldiers described AI-assisted targeting.
What is at stake War crimes are defined by the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute. A charge needs evidence, and remains found where homes were bombed can be evidence. Whether investigators get in decides whether that evidence is examined or lost.
Where it stands The UN wants international investigators to have access to all of Gaza. No report we hold carries Israel's reply.
