Al Jazeera carries Trump blaming Ukraine's strikes; IRNA and Shargh carry $9.99 and no cause at all
Three reports, one filling-station price board, and only one of them says why the number is there.
The price. IRNA and Shargh both carry $9.99 a gallon at one filling station, and both credit it to the same Bloomberg report, which we do not hold. Shargh names San Diego, California; IRNA places it only "in the United States". Neither outlet did the counting itself.
The cause. Al Jazeera is the only report of the three that offers one, and it offers it as the US president's assertion: Ukraine's attacks on Russian diesel infrastructure "are contributing to global fuel shortages". Hedged to "contributing", attributed inside the sentence, and tested by none of the three.
| Report | What it carries | Cause named |
|---|---|---|
| Al Jazeera English | no price; Trump telling Zelenskyy to stop | Ukrainian strikes, per Trump, "contributing to" |
| IRNA | $9.99, credited to Bloomberg, "in the United States" | none |
| Shargh | $9.99, credited to Bloomberg, in San Diego | none |
The word "record". IRNA's headline says record. The only figure in any of the three is one forecourt's sign.
Not settled. None of the three gives a national average, a period or a grade of fuel, so there is nothing to measure $9.99 against, and none names the price it is said to beat. None says what share of a pump price the disputed Russian supply actually moves. Two of the three quote a politician; none quotes anyone who buys the fuel.
What this is about. One filling station's price board in the United States reads $9.99 a gallon, and the only cause anyone offers for it is a war in Europe.
How it got here. Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, eight years after seizing Crimea and backing armed separatists in the country's east. Russia is among the world's largest exporters of crude oil and refined fuel, diesel included. Ukraine, outmatched on the ground, has spent much of the war striking Russian refineries, pumping stations and export terminals with long-range drones. Fuel is priced globally: refining capacity knocked out in one country moves the price in countries that buy none of its fuel. How much of any particular pump price that explains is contested, and nothing in this coverage settles it.
The United States has been Ukraine's largest military backer since 2022. Donald Trump returned to the presidency in January 2025, seeking a negotiated end to the war.
Who is involved. Trump is addressing Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine's president since 2019, who commands the forces carrying out those strikes. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is the speaker of Iran's parliament. Iran has been in confrontation with Washington since the 1979 revolution, its oil exports sit under US sanctions, and its own petrol is state-subsidised to a small fraction of American prices — so an American forecourt in double digits is a useful thing for an Iranian official to hold up, which he did with a clip of a long-running American cartoon. Bloomberg, the American financial news organisation credited by both Iranian outlets for the $9.99 figure, is not among the reports we hold.
What turns on it. If Kyiv stops, Russia keeps the refineries and the export earnings. If it does not, whatever the strikes do to fuel prices keeps doing it — and a pump price is paid by drivers, hauliers and anyone whose food arrives by truck, not by the governments arguing over it.
Where it stands. No national average has been put beside the $9.99.
What is being argued about
- Why US pump prices are where they are — and whether any report we hold shows it
- A single filling station's price board, relayed second hand by two outlets
- Ukraine's strikes on Russian diesel infrastructure, as the US president describes them
- What is missing: a national average, a period, and anyone who buys the fuel
