Asharq Al-Awsat says Iraq is enforcing US sanctions on Najaf flights; Iran's Mokhber calls it siding with America
Flights between Iran and Najaf stopped on Friday. One headline gives a reason with no source. An Iranian official gives another. No report we hold quotes an Iraqi official.
What happened. Flights between Iran and Iraq's Najaf airport stopped on Friday morning, Iran's civil aviation organisation said in Shargh. It told airlines to stop showing and selling tickets on the route "until further notice".
Four reports, three accounts of who acted and why.
| Report | Who stopped the flights | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Asharq Al-Awsat (headline only) | Najaf | "Enforcing US Sanctions", no source given |
| The Jerusalem Post | Iraq, "all flights" | none in its headline |
| Shargh, Iran's aviation body | no actor named: flights "stopped" | none given |
| Shargh, Mokhber | Iraq, by implication | "alignment with America in implementing hostile policies" |
Tehran's warning. Mohammad Mokhber, an aide to Iran's Supreme Leader, said that alignment "will remain etched in the memory of the Iranian nation", Shargh and The Jerusalem Post report. "Flight in the region is either free for all, or for no one," he said, in The Jerusalem Post's translation.
Who is missing. Two reports quote an Iranian official. None quotes an Iraqi official. We hold only Asharq Al-Awsat's headline, not its text.
What is not settled. - Why Iraq acted. The sanctions reason rests on one headline that cites no one. - The scope: all flights, says The Jerusalem Post. Iranian airlines, says Asharq Al-Awsat. - How long the halt lasts, and what Mokhber's "for no one" would mean in practice. No report says.
What this is about. Iraq has stopped flights between Iran and the Shia holy city of Najaf, and Iran reads that as Baghdad taking Washington's side.
How it got here. Najaf holds the shrine of Imam Ali, the first Shia imam, and it draws Iranian pilgrims in large numbers. The US-led invasion of 2003 removed Saddam Hussein, and since then Iraq has been governed by Shia-led coalitions, several of them close to Tehran. The United States has kept troops and strong financial leverage in the country. Iraq buys Iranian gas and electricity, and it has needed US waivers to pay for them.
In 2018 the United States left the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions on Iran. Several Iranian airlines are under US sanctions. In June 2025 Israel struck Iran's nuclear sites, and then the United States did. Through all of it, Baghdad has tried to keep on terms with both its neighbour and its main security partner.
The actors. - Iraq's government controls Najaf airport and decides who lands there. - Iran's pilgrims and airlines use the route. - The United States sets the sanctions and presses other countries to enforce them. - Mohammad Mokhber was Iran's first vice-president, and acting president after Ebrahim Raisi died in May 2024. The reports describe him as an aide to the Supreme Leader.
What is at stake. For pilgrims, a direct route to a shrine. For Baghdad, whether it can stay on terms with both Tehran and Washington. For Iran, an air link to its closest Arab neighbour. Mokhber's words point to airspace as a lever. No report says what Iran would do.
Where it stands. Iran's aviation body has halted ticket sales until further notice. No report we hold carries Iraq's own explanation.
The story so far

What is being argued about
- Who halted the Najaf flights, and whether any report names Iraq as the one that acted
- Whether US sanctions were the reason, a claim carried by one headline with no source
- Mokhber's warning that flight in the region 'is either free for all, or for no one'
- No Iraqi official's account in any report
