Bagayoko denies lighting the bin, Le Figaro reports; Libération says a longer video shows him stopping damage
A clip of Saint-Denis's mayor beside a burning bin at a school blockade spread on 29 September. Le Figaro leads with his denial and with his opponents calling him 'irresponsible'. Libération says a longer video undoes the accusation. Neither names a single accuser.
What happened. Pupils blocked lycées across France on Tuesday 29 September. It was also a day of national union strikes. A clip showed Bally Bagayoko, the LFI mayor of Saint-Denis, beside a burning bin. Libération says Europe 1 and the outlet Frontières spread the clip. It says he was then accused of "celebrating" the disorder.
Two accounts of one clip.

|---|---|---|
| Whose voice leads | His denial | Its own fact-check |
| His version | He says he tried to put the fire out and calm tensions | Not quoted |
| The video | Not mentioned | A longer clip "shows he prevented damage" |
| The accusers | "His opponents", unnamed | "The far right", no person named |
| Verdict | Both sides attributed | Stated in its own voice |
The wider protest. Le Figaro says the protest is "gaining ground" this week and maps the schools affected. HotNews.ro quotes pupils: "Are we pupils or prisoners?" It gives their grievances as timetables and class sizes.
What is not settled. - Only Libération reports the longer video. We have not seen it, and no other report we hold describes it. - We hold only the opening lines of Libération's report. - No report names who called his part "irresponsible". - No report gives a count of blockaded schools.
What this is about. A left-wing mayor near Paris is accused of cheering on disorder at a pupils' protest. Two national papers read the evidence differently.
How it got here. French secondary-school pupils have a long habit of the blocus. They stack bins and barriers across a lycée's gates to keep classes from starting. Blockades have come with most large protest movements in France for decades, from pension reforms to university-entry reforms. This round began last week, HotNews.ro reports, over timetables, class sizes and school conditions. On Tuesday it fell on a day of national strikes called by the unions, and Le Figaro reports it spreading. Then a bin burned at a blockade in Saint-Denis, and a clip showed the town's mayor standing near it. A protest story became a political one.
Who is involved. Saint-Denis is a suburban town just north of Paris, in the Seine-Saint-Denis département. Its mayor, Bally Bagayoko, belongs to La France insoumise (LFI). LFI is the left party founded by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, and in the European Parliament it sits with The Left. Le Figaro reports that LFI has come to his defence. Libération says the clip was spread by Europe 1, a national radio station, and by Frontières. Le Figaro says his opponents call his part in the blockades "irresponsible", but it does not name them.
What is at stake. The question is whether an elected official helped calm a protest or egged it on. A French mayor holds police powers in the town and has a duty to keep order there.
Where it stands. Bagayoko denies lighting or cheering the fire. Libération says a longer video backs him. No other report we hold describes that video.
What is being argued about
- Did the Saint-Denis mayor stoke the fire or try to put it out?
- Who spread the short clip, and who are the accusers?
- Why pupils are blockading their schools
- How far the blockades have spread
