CENTCOM says Iran exported no oil; An-Nahar calls it a claim, LBCI runs its figures as the admiral's own words
The US commander in the Gulf says more than 2,000 merchant ships have crossed the Strait of Hormuz under escort and that Iran has not exported one barrel of oil. We hold no second source for any of it. The three reports that carry the figures handle them differently, and Seoul says its president's 'no troops' was not a refusal.
One source for every figure. Adm. Brad Cooper, who heads US Central Command (CENTCOM), told reporters on Saturday that the main lanes through Hormuz are clear of mines. He said more than 2,000 merchant ships had crossed under 'coordinated protection', and that Iran 'has not exported a single barrel' because of the US blockade. An-Nahar carried his remarks, and LBCI ran two of them as headlines. Neither outlet sets any figure against a second source.
Three reports, three ways of handling the figures.
| Report | What it carries | How |
|---|---|---|
| An-Nahar | ships, mines, cargo volume, Iran's exports | 'announced', 'added', then 'claimed' for Iran's exports only |
| LBCI | 2,000+ ships; 1bn+ barrels in two months | headlines in the commander's first person |
| Shargh | Egypt–US call on Hormuz | 'American aggression against Iran', credited to Al-Ahram |
Two words for one campaign. An-Nahar quotes the admiral calling it a 'blockade'. In Shargh's account it is 'aggression'. Shargh credits that account to Egypt's Al-Ahram, so we cannot tell whose word it is.
Seoul. On Friday President Lee Jae-myung said South Korea would send troops to no war. According to An-Nahar, citing Yonhap, an unnamed presidential official said on Saturday that this 'does not mean a rejection' of Trump's request.
Not settled: whether Iran is exporting anything. No Iranian official and no independent tanker count appears in any report we hold. We also do not know what Seoul will actually send.
What this is about: the United States says it has reopened the Strait of Hormuz to shipping while stopping Iran from selling its oil. Other governments are being asked to help.
How it got here. The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow sea lane between Iran and Oman. It is the only way out of the Gulf, and oil and gas from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and Iran all pass through it. The US and Iran have been adversaries since the 1979 revolution. In 2015 Iran agreed limits on its nuclear programme with world powers, in exchange for relief from sanctions. In 2018 the first Trump administration pulled out of that deal and reimposed sanctions aimed at cutting Iran's oil sales. The region grew more tense after the war in Gaza that followed the 7 October 2023 attacks. In June 2025 Israel and Iran fought an open war, and the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites. According to An-Nahar, CENTCOM announced in April 2026 that it had begun clearing mines from the strait. The reports we hold describe a US naval blockade of Iran. They do not say how the current fighting began, and we do not state it.
The actors. CENTCOM is the US military command for the Middle East. Iran borders the strait and depends on oil sales. South Korea buys much of its oil from the Gulf, and its navy's Cheonghae unit already patrols the region against piracy. Egypt's income depends on shipping through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. Its foreign minister, Badr Abdelatty, spoke by phone with Massad Boulos, Trump's senior adviser on Arab and African affairs.
What is at stake. If the strait stays open and Iran's exports stay at zero, Washington squeezes Tehran's main income without closing the world's oil route. If either half fails, oil prices and the war both move. Allies who join take a side.
Where it stands. According to An-Nahar, CENTCOM said in July that it had helped about 900 ships and 450 million barrels through since early May. It now says more than 2,000 ships. Iran's side of the account is missing from every report we hold.
