De Standaard calls Jan G. a suspect in the Overasselt raid; NOS says his was the house that was shot at
German police held a 28-year-old man from Overasselt on 18 September at the Dutch police's request. A Belgian paper's headline calls him a suspect in the village raid. The Dutch broadcaster says the raid targeted his home, and that he is wanted over nearly 4,000 kg of cocaine found at Dunkirk.
The arrest. NOS says Jan G., 28, was held at a car park on the A44 near Soest, Germany, at the request of the Dutch police. NOS says its own sources confirmed the name. De Standaard carries the same arrest in one sentence and says it is relying on Dutch media.
The disagreement. The two reports give him opposite roles.
| De Standaard | NOS | |
|---|---|---|
| Who he is | "suspect in the raid" (headline) | the man whose house was shot at |
| Why he was held | "in the investigation into the violence" | suspected of trying to import nearly 4,000 kg of cocaine |
| Sourced to | Dutch media | a police press release and its own sources |
De Standaard's own sentence does not call him a suspect in the raid. Only its headline does.
The raid case. NOS cites the Dutch public prosecution service. It says 33 people were arrested over the shooting and 32 stay in custody. A 22-year-old Belgian is being released but remains a suspect. The 32 are suspected of murdering a 51-year-old guard, shooting at police officers and carrying firearms.
What is not settled. - Whether he is a suspect in the raid at all. NOS says only that the raid inquiry led police to him. - Who fired at the house. NOS does not say. - The guard's name. Neither report gives it. - The custody figures. Only NOS carries them, so they rest on one account.
This story is about a man from a Dutch village. In under three weeks he was at the centre of a deadly shooting and then of a cross-border cocaine investigation.
Where it happened. Overasselt is a village in the municipality of Heumen, in the province of Gelderland. It lies just south of Nijmegen, in the east of the Netherlands.
How it got here. Cocaine from South America reaches Europe mostly by container ship through the North Sea ports. For years the Netherlands and Belgium have been among its main points of entry. Dutch police and prosecutors have linked that trade to a run of violent crime at home. NOS says a group of heavily armed men went through Overasselt on 1 September and shots were fired at the house of Jan G. A 51-year-old guard died. NOS also says nearly 4,000 kg of cocaine was found in containers at Dunkirk, a French port on the Channel, on 7 September. Police say the investigation into the shooting led them to Jan G. German police held him on the A44 near Soest on 18 September.
The actors. The Dutch police and the Openbaar Ministerie, the Dutch public prosecution service, run both inquiries. Germany made the arrest at their request. Arrests between EU member states are usually made under the European Arrest Warrant. France is involved because the cocaine was found at Dunkirk. NOS says the suspects in the shooting include men from Amsterdam, Hoorn, Capelle aan den IJssel and Marseille, a 22-year-old Belgian and two French minors.
What is at stake. Suppose Jan G. was the target of the raid and is a suspect in the cocaine import. Then the shooting looks like violence between people in the drug trade, spread across four countries. If he is a suspect in the raid itself, the case reads very differently. The reports we hold do not settle it.
Where it stands. 32 people remain in custody over the shooting. The prosecution service says the inquiry will take months more and more arrests are possible. No dates have been set yet for the first preliminary hearings.
What is being argued about
- Whether the man arrested is a suspect in the Overasselt raid or its target
- His arrest in Germany over nearly 4,000 kg of cocaine found at Dunkirk
- The 33 held over the shooting, and the Belgian who is being released
- A guard killed in the shooting, whom neither report names
