De Standaard says 'maritime incident', HotNews.ro says a drone hit the ship. No report says who launched it
A Turkish grain ship sank in Romania's economic zone, about 8 nautical miles from an OMV Petrom oil platform. Two sailors died. Three of five reports say flat out that a drone hit it, and two credit the drone to the media. None names who sent it.
What happened. The Turkish cargo ship Royad Mammadov, carrying grain, sank in the Black Sea on Monday, HotNews.ro reports. Two sailors died. The Romanian Coast Guard was told of a fire on board at around 11:00.
Where. HotNews.ro says it was outside Romania's territorial waters, about 20 nautical miles offshore. Der Standard places it in Romania's economic zone. One HotNews.ro report puts it 8 nautical miles from the Pescăruș oil platform. Another gives the Coast Guard's figure of 9.
What to call it. The outlets use different words.
| Outlet | What hit the ship | How it is put |
|---|---|---|
| De Standaard | "maritime incident" in its headline | drone credited to Romanian media |
| Der Standard | a drone | "according to media reports" |
| HotNews.ro (3 reports) | a drone | stated as fact, no source named |
The Interior Ministry and Coast Guard statements that HotNews.ro quotes speak only of a fire.
The crew. HotNews.ro says 13 were missing at first. One of its reports says 11 were rescued. Another says 11 were injured.
The platform. OMV Petrom told HotNews.ro the incident did not affect its operations or staff "in any way". None of the crew is quoted.
Not settled. - Who launched the drone, or whether there was one. No report says. - Who the two dead are. No report names them. - Whether the 11 survivors are hurt.
What this is about. A merchant ship sank after a reported drone strike in the part of the Black Sea where Romania holds economic rights, close to a Romanian oil and gas platform.
How it got here. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. The Black Sea became a front. Ukraine's ports, its grain exports and the ships that carry them have been part of the war from the start. A deal brokered by the UN and Turkey let Ukrainian grain ships sail from July 2022 until Russia withdrew in July 2023. Ukraine then ran its own shipping corridor down the western Black Sea, past the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria. Since then, debris from drones has repeatedly come down on Romanian soil near the Danube border with Ukraine.
Who is involved. Romania borders Ukraine. It has been in NATO since 2004 and in the European Union since 2007, so an attack in its waters touches both alliances. Its territorial sea runs 12 nautical miles from shore. Beyond that, in its exclusive economic zone, Romania controls resources such as oil and gas, but not the ships passing through. Turkey, named as the ship's country in the reports, controls the Bosphorus, the only sea route between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. OMV Petrom, part-owned by Austria's OMV, runs the Pescăruș platform. HotNews.ro says it sits in the Istria field, found in 1999.
What is at stake. If a drone did sink a ship this close to an EU member's offshore energy, the war has reached waters the Union counts as its own economic space. Who sent it decides what follows. A Russian strike, a Ukrainian one and a stray drone would each mean something different for Romania, NATO and Turkey.
Where it stands. The reports we hold carry a sunk ship, two dead and a rescue. They do not say who launched the drone. They carry no official statement that a drone was involved.
What is being argued about
- Whether to call it a 'maritime incident' or a drone strike
- Who launched the drone, which no report says
- Two dead, and 11 survivors described as rescued in one report and injured in another
- How close the war came to Romania's Pescăruș oil platform
