De Standaard says police wrongly took Alfredo Goeloe for a bike thief; De Telegraaf calls him a fleeing suspect carrying drugs
Alfredo Goeloe died during an arrest in Rotterdam at the weekend. Two outlets describe him in opposite ways. Neither says who or what caused his death.
What we hold. Three reports from 15 September: one from De Standaard and two from De Telegraaf. We hold only the opening lines of each.
What they agree on. Alfredo Goeloe died during an arrest in Rotterdam at the weekend. De Telegraaf gives his age as 51. De Standaard reports unrest in the city on Monday evening, after a silent march for him.
Where they split.
| De Standaard | De Telegraaf | |
|---|---|---|
| Who he was | "alleged bike thief" in the headline; the text says officers took him for one "wrongly" | a "suspect" who ran from a police check |
| Drugs | not mentioned | "more than a personal-use quantity" |
| Source given | none | several unnamed sources, for the drugs |
| When he died | Saturday | Saturday evening; the night of Saturday to Sunday |
Who acted. Neither outlet names an actor in the death. De Standaard says he "lost his life during an arrest". De Telegraaf says he "died during his arrest". It names police only as running after him.
The family. De Telegraaf reports that the family wants to file a complaint against the officers for "possible police violence". That claim is hedged. Its drugs claim is not.
What is not settled. - Whether the bike-theft suspicion was wrong. Only De Standaard says so, and it names no source. - Whether he carried drugs. Only De Telegraaf says so, and it does not name its sources. - How he died. No report we hold gives a cause, or any statement from police or prosecutors.
Alfredo Goeloe, 51, died during an arrest by police in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, at the weekend. De Standaard puts his death on Saturday; De Telegraaf puts it on Saturday evening and in the night into Sunday. De Telegraaf reports footage showing officers running after him. No report we hold says how he died, and none carries a word from the police or from prosecutors.
On Monday evening people walked in a silent march for him in Rotterdam. De Standaard reports that the city was unsettled afterwards. His family wants to file a complaint against the officers over possible police violence, De Telegraaf reports.
What is contested is the man himself — why officers stopped him, and what he was carrying. Those accounts are being settled in public before anyone has established what caused his death.
What is being argued about
- Whether officers wrongly suspected Goeloe of stealing a bike
- De Telegraaf's claim, from unnamed sources, that he carried drugs
- Who or what caused a death both outlets place 'during an arrest'
- The family's plan to file a complaint against the officers
