De Standaard says six dead in Athens blast; De Telegraaf and HotNews.ro say two
A building below the Acropolis collapsed after an explosion on Friday. Five reports published within 90 minutes on Saturday give two, four and six dead. Some of the later reports still carry the lower figure. No report names the dead or establishes the cause.
Six dead, by the latest count. A two-storey residential building in Plaka, below the Acropolis in Athens, collapsed after an explosion on Friday. By late Saturday morning Efimerida ton Syntakton reported all six missing people dead, and De Standaard said rescuers had found six bodies.
Four outlets, three figures. Published Saturday morning, UTC:
| Outlet | Time | Figure | Who gave it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Efimerida ton Syntakton | 10:15 | four dead, two missing | not stated |
| Efimerida ton Syntakton | 11:06 | all six missing dead | not stated |
| HotNews.ro | 11:10 | two dead, four missing | fire service, via Reuters |
| De Telegraaf | 11:32 | "at least two"; ERT says four | fire brigade; ERT |
| De Standaard | 11:43 | six bodies | rescuers, no official named |
The lower figures ran later. HotNews.ro and De Telegraaf printed two dead after the Greek paper had six. Neither says when its figure was issued. The gap looks like timing, not a dispute over what happened.
The victims. No report names any of the dead. Only De Telegraaf says one was "a young American woman". HotNews.ro says two American tourist couples were staying in the building.
What is not settled - The cause. De Standaard calls it a "suspected gas explosion". Efimerida ton Syntakton's headline quotes "there was no complaint of a gas smell" and does not say who said it. - Who died. None of the six is named in the reports we hold. - The full text. We hold only the opening lines of the Belgian and Dutch reports.
What this is. A building collapsed in the historic centre of Athens, and the death toll rose through Saturday morning as rescuers recovered bodies.
Where. Plaka is the old quarter of Athens, on the slopes directly below the Acropolis. Its narrow streets of low, old houses are among the most visited parts of the Greek capital. The district is at the heart of the city's tourist trade.
How it got here. On Friday 25 September an explosion destroyed a two-storey residential building in Plaka, HotNews.ro reports, citing Reuters. Rescue teams searched the rubble into Saturday. Six people were missing. Bodies were recovered one or two at a time, so the figure each outlet printed depended on when it took it: two, then four, then six. By late Saturday morning Efimerida ton Syntakton reported that all six missing were dead.
Who is involved. - The Hellenic Fire Service leads search and rescue in Greece. It is the only source any outlet named for its death toll. - ERT is Greece's public broadcaster. De Telegraaf cites it for a count of four. - Greek investigators are now examining the cause. The reports we hold do not say which authority leads the inquiry. - Foreign visitors were in the building. HotNews.ro says two American tourist couples were staying there.
What is at stake. The cause decides what kind of event this was. A gas leak would point to the supply, the fittings or the maintenance of an old building, and to whoever was responsible for them. If it was not gas, investigators have to look elsewhere. De Standaard calls gas the suspected cause. Efimerida ton Syntakton reports that nobody had complained of a gas smell beforehand.
Where it stands. All six missing people are reported dead, so the search appears to be over. The cause is under investigation. None of the dead is named in the reports we hold.
What is being argued about
- How many people died: two, four or six, depending on when each outlet took its figure
- Whether gas caused the explosion: one report calls it suspected, another quotes an unnamed speaker saying nobody had complained of a gas smell
- Who the victims are: none named, one described only as a young American woman
- Which outlets say where their figure came from: two of the five reports
