De Telegraaf says a far-right activist stabbed a 'migrant boat'; Dagens Nyheter says he cut up a 'rescue boat'
A British activist is in custody over an attack on a boat in the Channel. Two European papers disagree on what kind of boat it was, and only one says he denies it.
One boat, two words. Both reports say a man attacked a boat linked to Channel crossings. They do not agree what the boat was.
| De Telegraaf (Netherlands) | Dagens Nyheter (Sweden) | |
|---|---|---|
| The boat | "migrantenboot" — migrant boat | "räddningsbåt" — rescue boat |
| The act | charged with stabbing it | "skar sönder" — cut it up, stated as fact |
| The man | "extreemrechtse activist" in the headline, "anti-immigratieactivist" in the body | "högerextremist" |
| Named? | Daniel Thomas, 37, "Danny Tommo" | not named |
| His plea | not guilty, still in custody | not reported |
| The week | no figures | over 1,000 crossed; three migrants dead |
Charge or fact. De Telegraaf presents the stabbing as a charge and carries his denial. Dagens Nyheter states the attack flat, with no charge and no plea.
The label. Both papers call him far-right. Neither says who calls him that.
The dead. Dagens Nyheter counts three migrants dead this week. It names none of them. It does not say how they died or where its figures come from.
What is not settled - Whether the boat carried migrants, rescued them, or was something else. We hold only the opening lines of each report. - Where and when the attack took place. - The exact charge he faces. - Who counted the 1,000 crossings and the three dead.
What this is about. A British man is in custody, accused of attacking a boat tied to the small-boat crossings of the English Channel.
How it got here. The Channel is the narrow sea between England and France. From 2018, people seeking asylum in Britain began crossing it from the northern French coast in small, often inflatable, boats. The route grew as tighter checks at the ports and the Channel Tunnel closed off crossings hidden in lorries and on ferries.
Britain left the European Union on 31 January 2020. That took it out of the EU's Dublin system, under which an asylum seeker can be sent back to the member state they first entered. Since then London has relied on deals with Paris. It pays towards French policing of the beaches. In July 2025 the two governments announced a pilot scheme: some people who cross are returned to France, and others are admitted to Britain legally in exchange.
The crossings have become one of the most divisive issues in British politics. Anti-immigration protests, some organised by activists on the far right, have targeted housing for asylum seekers. Campaigners have also filmed and confronted boats at sea.
Who is involved. The British government, which decides asylum claims and polices its coast. The French government, which patrols the beaches the boats leave from. Rescue crews, including Britain's volunteer lifeboat service, which bring people ashore. And the people crossing, who are the ones at risk of drowning.
What is at stake. If the boat was a rescue vessel, the case is about an attack on the people who pull others from the water. If it carried migrants, the attack was on those people directly. The reports we hold do not settle which.
Where it stands. According to De Telegraaf, the accused has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody.
What is being argued about
- Whether the boat attacked was a rescue boat or a migrant boat
- Whether the attack is reported as a charge or as a fact
- Who calls the accused far-right
- Three migrant deaths counted but not named
