Der Standard names three governments, the Frankfurter Allgemeine counts twelve
Three European papers filed on Britain's move against Israeli settlement trade within 18 minutes of each other. They give three counts of who is acting and three descriptions of what is banned.
The measure. Britain has moved against trade tied to Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Three European papers filed on it on 9 September within 18 minutes, and no two describe the same thing.
The count. Der Standard names three governments. The Frankfurter Allgemeine says Britain acted "gemeinsam mit elf anderen Ländern" — twelve in all — and names none of the eleven. Dagens Nyheter gives no total at all.
| Outlet | How many governments | What it says is banned |
|---|---|---|
| Der Standard | three, all named: Britain, France, Canada | imports from Israeli settlements |
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | twelve: Britain plus "eleven other countries", unnamed | sanctions on Israeli exports from the West Bank |
| Dagens Nyheter | Britain only, no total | "all trade with Israeli settlers" |
The reaction. Dagens Nyheter is alone in carrying a US response: the American ambassador in Israel called the move "judehat" — Jew-hatred — and President Donald Trump has not opposed it. The Frankfurter Allgemeine reports the British foreign secretary answering Israeli criticism by pointing to his own Jewishness, and heads the piece on him reassuring British Jews. Der Standard alone quotes Israeli human-rights organisations welcoming the step.
Not settled. Which governments. Not one of the three reports lists them, so twelve is a number no reader can check. Nor whether settlement imports, West Bank exports and all trade with settlers are one measure or several. No report we hold quotes anyone in Palestine, and none quotes a settler.
What it is about. Britain has moved to restrict trade tied to Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
How it got here. Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza in the war of June 1967, and has held the West Bank under military occupation ever since. Israeli civilians began settling there in the first years of that occupation, on land Palestinians claim for a state. The Oslo Accords of 1993–95 created a Palestinian Authority with limited powers and left the settlements to a final-status negotiation that never took place. In December 2016 the UN Security Council declared the settlements to have no legal validity. In July 2024 the International Court of Justice, the UN's court in The Hague, advised that Israel's presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful and should end. Israel rejects both. Neither finding can be enforced, which is why the pressure keeps returning as a trade question: what individual governments will and will not buy.
That pressure grew after the war that began with the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023 and Israel's campaign in Gaza. In September 2025 Britain, France, Canada and Australia recognised Palestine as a state, over American and Israeli objections. Settlement building continued; Der Standard ties the British measure to a large settlement project.
Who is in it. Britain is the government acting, its foreign secretary Ed Miliband defending it. France and Canada are named by Der Standard as acting with it; the Frankfurter Allgemeine puts eleven unnamed countries alongside Britain. Israel's government objects. The United States — Israel's main ally and arms supplier — speaks here through its ambassador in Israel, who condemned the step, and through a president who has not. Palestinians in the West Bank, whose land the settlements stand on, are quoted in none of the reports we hold.
At stake. Whether settlement goods are treated as ordinary Israeli trade or as goods European states refuse — and whether Britain stands alone or at the head of twelve.
Where it stands. Announced, criticised, uncounted. We filed on 8 September that the Emirati president had warned Israel's prime minister, named by CBC and left as "at the highest level" by taz.
The story so far
- CBC names the Emirati president as the man who warned Netanyahu; taz says only "at the highest level" · 8 Sep 2026
Earlier stories The AI Times filed on this thread.
What is being argued about
- How many governments are sanctioning Israeli settlement trade — three named, or twelve counted
- What is banned: settlement imports, West Bank exports, or all trade with settlers
- The reaction carried: a US ambassador's "judehat", Trump's silence, and the British foreign secretary's answer to Israeli criticism
- Who is quoted on a measure about Palestinian land — and who is not
