Der Standard says a gas leak brought down the Plaka building; the owner says there was no gas

An explosion before dawn on Friday brought down a building on Lysikratous Street, below the Acropolis in Athens. An Austrian paper says gas caused it and counts five missing: two residents and three tourists. The Greek paper that reached the owner calls the cause a mystery, and the owner says three guests were registered.

What happened. An explosion early on Friday brought down a building on Lysikratous Street in Plaka, in central Athens, Efimerida ton Syntakton reports. The paper says flats 40 to 50 metres away were damaged, citing footage from the Orange Press Agency.

The cause. Der Standard states it flat: "Ein Gasleck brachte das Gebäude zum Einsturz" (a gas leak brought the building down). It names no source. Efimerida ton Syntakton says the cause is a mystery while the authorities investigate. It quotes the Airbnb owner: "Δεν έχουμε αέριο, ούτε μπουκάλες" (we have no gas, no gas bottles).

The mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, told Efimerida ton Syntakton that people are missing and dogs are searching. The mayor gave no number. No report names anyone who is missing.

Lysikratous Street is named after the Monument of Lysicrates, a small marble monument from the 4th century BC that stands in the quarter. The streets are narrow and the houses are old and low. It is one of the most visited parts of the city, and people still live there.

How it got here. Over the past decade, short-term holiday lets booked through platforms such as Airbnb have spread across central Athens. In quarters like Plaka, tourists and long-time residents now often sleep in the same buildings. That is why the missing, as one paper counts them, include both. Greece has argued over this for years. Residents' groups blame the lets for pushing up rents. From 2025 the government stopped new short-term lets from registering in the three central districts of Athens.
