Efimerida ton Syntakton calls it "the crime at Tempi", Kathimerini calls it "the rail accident"
The trial of 36 people over the 2023 collision that killed 57 resumed in Larissa on Monday. Four reports, two Athens outlets, three different words for what is on trial.
The word, in each outlet's own voice. Not a quotation, not a party's phrase — the opening sentence of each report.
| Report | Word in its own first line | Names one of the dead |
|---|---|---|
| Efimerida ton Syntakton, 07:50 | "the crime at Tempi" | no |
| Efimerida ton Syntakton, 11:29 | "the Tempi tragedy" | yes — Giorgos Koutsoumbas, the driver |
| Kathimerini, 07:08 | "rail accident at Tempi" | no — "the driver of the passenger train, one of the 57" |
| Kathimerini, 09:43 | "the rail accident" | no |
What all four carry. 33 of the 36 defendants face a felony — dangerous interference with rail transport, committed with possible intent — that carries up to life imprisonment. The other three face misdemeanour counts only; two of them are Hellenic Train executives.
What one carries and the others do not. Kathimerini reports from the room: six of the 36 defendants attended, and the former OSE inspection chief told the court he "kept to the law". Efimerida ton Syntakton gives a lawyer for two families several paragraphs — the government "use fireworks and hide the truth" — and quotes nobody he accuses.
Not settled. The attendance figure rests on Kathimerini alone; no report we hold contradicts it. No report we hold quotes a defence lawyer, or a relative of a victim directly. Whether the felony charge stands is what the trial is now hearing evidence on.
What this is about. Greece is trying 36 people over the deadliest rail crash in its history. The case asks who is criminally responsible for it.
How it got here. - 28 February 2023. Just before midnight, near Tempi, north of Larissa, a passenger train from Athens to Thessaloniki ran on the same track as a freight train coming the other way. The two collided head-on. 57 people died. Efimerida ton Syntakton reports that most were aged 15 to 25. - Before the crash. The trains ran on one route, but three bodies were involved. OSE owns and runs the network. ERGOSE builds its upgrades. Hellenic Train runs the trains; the Greek state privatised it in 2017. A contract to restore and upgrade signalling on the Athens–Thessaloniki line, known as Contract 717, was still unfinished by 2023. Kathimerini reports it had been extended seven times. - After the crash. It became a national political issue. There were large protests, most of all around the second anniversary in 2025. The Greek arm of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, the EU body that investigates misuse of EU money, opened its own case on Contract 717. - 23 March 2026. The trial opened before the three-judge Felony Court of Appeal in Larissa.
Who is in it, and why. - The accused: station masters, OSE and ERGOSE executives, a former head of the rail regulator, two transport ministry officials and two Hellenic Train executives. All of them held posts between 2016 and 2023. - Supporting the prosecution: relatives of the dead, survivors and the Greek state. The court limited the state's role to the three station masters and one OSE inspection chief. The families object to that. - The government: a lawyer for two families accuses it of trying to bury the case. None of the reports we hold carries the government's reply.
What is at stake. 33 of the accused face a felony charge that carries up to life imprisonment. The court has put off any decision on toughening the charges until the evidence has been heard.
Where it stands. After the August break, witness testimony is about to begin. The first witnesses will be the family of the passenger train's driver.
What is being argued about
- What the 2023 Tempi collision is called: a crime, a tragedy, or a rail accident
- The charge sheet: 33 of 36 defendants face a felony carrying up to life
- The Greek State joining the prosecution against four defendants only
- Who is quoted and who is named as the evidentiary stage opens
