Espreso says Russian drones hit Kyiv's Southern Bridge three times; Regnum says 'the authorities closed' the bridges and residents are fleeing
Six of the ten reports we hold name Russian strikes on Kyiv. Two Russian reports explain the closed bridges and an 'exodus' without mentioning any strike. We hold no evidence that people are leaving, and no death toll.
What happened. Espreso TV reports that Russian drones hit Kyiv's Southern Bridge twice on 1 October: a support in the morning, the roadway in the evening. It reports another attack overnight into 2 October. Police closed the bridge in both directions. The green metro line across it has stopped.
Who is named as acting. The accounts split on the cause.
| Outlet | What closed the bridges | Strike mentioned? |
|---|---|---|
| Espreso TV | "Russian drones" hit the Southern Bridge | Yes |
| Suspilne | Russians attack bridges "to create transport problems" | Yes |
| Kyiv Post | Zelensky: Russia targets infrastructure to push people out | Yes |
| Regnum | "the authorities closed traffic" on the largest bridges | No |
| Life.ru | "restrictions on traffic", no actor named | No |
The exodus claim. Regnum and Life.ru say residents are leaving "en masse". Both rest it on one Ukrainian outlet, Insider, and on more flats coming up for rent. None of the eight Ukrainian reports we hold describe people leaving.
The motive. The Kyiv Post attributes the aim to Zelensky. Suspilne's headline gives it to an expert; its text states it as fact.
What is not settled. - Whether anyone is leaving Kyiv, and how many. No report gives a number. - Why Russia hit the bridges. No Russian report we hold addresses it. - How many were hurt. Suspilne names one woman killed, Yelyzaveta Devdiuk. No report gives a toll. - When the metro runs again. Klitschko says that waits on an expert assessment.
This story is about Russian drone strikes on the bridges that join the two halves of Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, and two opposite accounts of what the closures mean.
How it got here. Russia and Ukraine have been at war since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and backed armed separatists in the eastern Donbas region. In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Its forces reached the outskirts of Kyiv and were pushed back that spring. The capital has stayed in Ukrainian hands since, but it has been hit again and again from the air, by missiles and drones, often aimed at power stations and other infrastructure.
Why the bridges matter. The Dnipro river cuts Kyiv in two, into a right bank and a left bank. A handful of bridges carry the traffic between them. The Southern Bridge carries both a road and the metro's green line. When it closes, people who live on one bank and work on the other lose the most direct way across.
The actors. Volodymyr Zelensky has been Ukraine's president since 2019. Vitali Klitschko has been mayor of Kyiv since 2014; he reported on the city defence council's meeting about the bridges. Regnum and Life.ru are Russian outlets writing for a Russian audience. Espreso TV, the Kyiv Post, Obozrevatel, Ekonomichna Pravda and Suspilne, the public broadcaster, report from inside Ukraine.
What is at stake. If the bridges stay shut, daily life in Kyiv gets harder: commutes, supplies, the metro. Zelensky says the strikes are meant to make people leave the capital. Russian outlets say people already are. If either account is true, the pressure falls on Kyiv's population, not only on the front line.
Where it stands. The Southern Bridge is closed to traffic. The metro says it can restart trains across it during lower-level air alerts, once scientific institutes report on the bridge's condition.
What is being argued about
- Who closed Kyiv's bridges: Russian drones, or 'the authorities'
- Whether Kyiv residents are leaving, and on what evidence
- Zelensky's claim that the strikes aim to push people out of the capital
- When the green metro line can cross the Southern Bridge again
