Espreso TV counts 42 seconds over Braniewo; Kyiv Post says only "briefly"
Five reports say a Russian Mi-8 crossed into Polish airspace on 23 September. All five trace to one Polish military statement. One kept the numbers in it. None carries a Russian account of the flight.
The flight. Poland's Operational Command says a Russian Mi-8 military helicopter flew in from Kaliningrad region and crossed into Polish airspace north of Braniewo on 23 September. Poland scrambled fighters; ground air-defence units were held at readiness. Every report we hold traces to that single statement.
The measure. Only Espreso TV prints one. It quotes the command: the helicopter "violated Polish airspace to a depth of about 300 m and remained in it for 42 sec", at 11:08. The other four report the crossing without measuring it.
| Report | What crossed | Measure given | The "testing" reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Espreso TV | Mi-8 from Kaliningrad region | 11:08, about 300 m, 42 seconds | quoted from the Polish command |
| Kyiv Post | Mi-8 near Braniewo | "briefly" | "another apparent test", credited to Warsaw |
| Suspilne | Mi-8 | none | what Polish soldiers "believe" |
| Censor.NET | Mi-8 from Kaliningrad region | none | not carried |
| The Insider | helicopter "invaded" | none | "checks readiness", in quotation marks |
The motive. Four of the five carry Warsaw's reading that Russia was testing Polish air defences. Each attaches it to the Polish military rather than asserting it.
Not settled. The depth, the duration and the time rest on one report of the command's words. Kyiv Post says the crossing follows several earlier Russian aircraft and drone violations, and gives no dates for them. No report we hold carries a Russian denial, confirmation or account of the flight.
What this is about. A Russian military helicopter flew across the border of Poland — a member of the NATO alliance — for under a minute, and the only account of it comes from the Polish military.
How it got here. Braniewo sits in northern Poland, close to the border with Kaliningrad region: a piece of Russia on the Baltic coast, cut off from the rest of the country by Poland and Lithuania since the Soviet Union broke up in 1991. It is a heavily militarised exclave, and the airspace above that border is where NATO and Russian forces come closest to each other on land. Poland joined NATO in 1999. Under the alliance's treaty an armed attack on one member is treated as an attack on all, which is why a helicopter over Braniewo is not a local matter. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, after a war in the country's east that started in 2014; since then Poland has been both a NATO frontier state and a main supply route into Ukraine. Kyiv Post reports that Wednesday's crossing follows several earlier Russian aircraft and drone violations of Polish airspace, without dating them. Espreso TV notes that two days before, on 21 September, Poland and Latvia scrambled military aircraft during a large Russian attack on Ukraine.
Who is in it. Poland's armed forces tracked the flight on radar and answered it. Russia flew the aircraft. Ukrainian outlets carried the story hardest, because what Russia does at NATO's eastern edge bears directly on their war.
What is at stake. A crossing like this is read either as an error or as a probe, and the reading decides whether Poland answers the next one as policing or as defence.
Where it stands. Poland's armed forces say their air-defence crews watch around the clock and stay at constant readiness. We hold no Russian account of the flight.
What is being argued about
- A Russian Mi-8 helicopter crossing into Polish airspace near Braniewo on 23 September
- How much of one Polish military statement each report kept
- Whether the flight was a deliberate test of Polish air defences, and who says so
- The absence of any Russian account of the flight
