Espreso TV says Azov freed Serednie and Rai-Oleksandrivka; TASS says Ukraine "continues to lose ground"
Six reports on one stretch of northern Donetsk, published within forty minutes of each other. Five carry Ukrainian military, official or analyst voices describing an advance; one carries a former Ukrainian soldier saying the line cannot be held. None confirms a village changing hands. None gives a casualty figure.
The operation. Espreso TV, relaying the Azov corps' own account, reports that Ukrainian units cleared a Russian force that had built up through the summer and was moving onto supply roads "щоб надалі оперативно оточити Дружківку" — to then encircle Druzhkivka — and strike towards Dobropillia. The corps named the units and supplied video.
The gains. Petro Horbatenko, chief of staff of Ukraine's Third Army Corps, told Espreso TV that Ukrainian forces have already freed a number of settlements, "зокрема Середнє та Рай-Олександрівку" — among them Serednie and Rai-Oleksandrivka — with other names withheld "із тактичних міркувань", for tactical reasons.
The counter. TASS, the Russian state agency, quotes a former Ukrainian soldier it names as Borzy: despite drones, "the Ukrainian armed forces continue to lose ground".

Not settled. No report we hold confirms any position changing hands, from either side. The advance is sourced to the units that carried it out; the reverse rests on one man. And the two accounts may not describe the same ground: Espreso TV places the advance on the Lyman axis in northern Donetsk region, while TASS speaks of Donbas as a whole.
What this is about. Two accounts of the same days on the same stretch of eastern Ukrainian front: one side says it is advancing, the other says the line cannot be held.
How it got here. Russia and Ukraine have been at war since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and fighting broke out in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine — the area usually called Donbas. Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022. In September 2022 it declared four Ukrainian regions annexed — Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson — without controlling all of any of them. Donetsk region has carried the heaviest fighting since. Druzhkivka, the town at the centre of today's reports, lies in the part of Donetsk region Ukraine still holds, on the road network feeding the Kramatorsk–Sloviansk belt to the north. That is why the Ukrainian account says the Russian force was reaching for roads rather than villages.
Who is in it. Azov began as a volunteer battalion in 2014 and is now a National Guard formation — a brigade and a corps; its units are named in the Ukrainian account. The Third Army Corps is the Ukrainian command running the offensive these reports call "Vivaldi". TASS is the Russian state news agency, carried here for what the Russian state is saying rather than as a record of fact. Espreso TV, Ukrainska Pravda and Obozrevatel are Ukrainian outlets.
What is at stake. Espreso TV's analyst, retired National Guard major Oleksii Hetman, says Russia set itself deadlines for taking Donetsk region; that is his claim, not a settled fact. If Ukrainian units have pushed back north of Druzhkivka, the approach to the Kramatorsk–Sloviansk belt is moved further away. If the Russian account is nearer the truth, the same line is thinning.
Where it stands. Every report here was published on 23 September 2026, the earliest and the latest thirty-nine minutes apart. Nothing we hold checks either account against a third party.
