Fico calls fuel prices "proof of EU cynicism"; Le Figaro dates the gap to the Middle East; Athens argues over arithmetic
Seven reports from four outlets give five causes for the same rise. One carries a number with its base: petrol in Romania up 6.6% in a month against a 3.3% EU average, Digi24 says, citing Eurostat.
Slovakia blames the Union. Prime minister Robert Fico asked on Tuesday for an extraordinary EU summit on fuel prices, Digi24 reports, citing Reuters and TASR. He attributed the rise to the ongoing wars, to "lipsei de acţiune la nivel european" (a lack of action at European level) and to oil companies' "lăcomiei", their greed. Digi24's headline carries his verdict: "dovada cinismului UE", proof of EU cynicism.
Everyone else blames something else.
| Reported by | Cause named | Whose words | Figure attached |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digi24, on Fico | wars, EU inaction, oil company greed | the prime minister's | none |
| Le Figaro | "la crise au Moyen-Orient" | the paper's own, unsourced | €2.29 to €2.46 a litre of diesel |
| Efimerida ton Syntakton, on PASOK | a government that acted late | spokesman Tsoukalas's | none |
| Efimerida ton Syntakton, on the finance ministry | opposition sums that do not add up | the ministry's | none |
| Observador, on the PS | the environment, or "risco de escassez"? | the party's question | none |
| Digi24, on Eurostat | none given | — | 6.6% in a month, 26.7% in a year |
What is not settled. No report we hold records an answer from the Council or the Commission to Fico's request, and none names the country that ranked above Romania. Le Figaro ties the widening French spread to a Middle East crisis with no source and no actor named. In Greece, the charge of delay and the charge of bad arithmetic are party claims, all three from one outlet.
This is a story about the price of motor fuel, and about five governments and oppositions that cannot agree on what made it rise or who should bring it down.
How it got here. Eurostat, the European Union's statistical office, publishes monthly price figures for the member states. Digi24 reports its August data, published on Tuesday 22 September: Romania had the EU's second-largest monthly rise in petrol, 6.6% against a 3.3% EU average, and fuels and lubricants there cost 26.7% more than in August 2025. A pump price is made of the crude oil price, refining and distribution margins, and tax. Tax is the part a government controls directly — excise duty and VAT are set nationally, and the Union only sets a floor below which excise may not fall. That is why the Greek argument is about excise and VAT rates, and why a demand put to the European Council is a different kind of demand from one put to a national finance ministry.
Who is in it. Robert Fico has been prime minister of Slovakia since October 2023; the extraordinary summit he asks for would mean the European Council — the heads of government — meeting outside its normal calendar. In Greece, PASOK and Alexis Tsipras, prime minister from 2015 to 2019, are opposition voices putting proposals to a finance ministry that answers them. In Portugal the PS, in opposition, is questioning the environment minister.
What is at stake. Whether the remedy is national — cutting excise or VAT, capping the price, taxing windfall profits — or European, and therefore slower. Of the causes named this week, two lie abroad and beyond any of these governments' reach.
Where it stands. Fico's request is unanswered in the reports we hold, the Greek exchange is a dispute between parties, and no report we hold puts the question to an oil company.
What is being argued about
- Whether the Union is a cause of the fuel price rise or the place to fix it
- Who is named as causing the rise, and whether it is said in a politician's voice or the paper's own
- What the figures count: a monthly change, an annual one, or a price at the pump
- The remedies on the table — excise duty, VAT, a price cap, a windfall tax, a summit
