Flydubai calls it a cockpit 'brawl'; Netanyahu says a pilot tried to crash the plane
A flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv landed in Saudi Arabia after one pilot stabbed the other. The airline says the cause is unknown. Israel's leaders call it terror.
Two accounts of one cockpit. Flydubai called it a scuffle whose causes "are not known" and are under investigation, iDNES.cz reports. Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said one pilot stabbed the other and "it appears he was attempting to crash the plane with everyone on board", The Guardian reports. Defence minister Israel Katz called it an attempted jihadist terror act, iDNES.cz reports.
| Question | The airline says | Israel's government says |
|---|---|---|
| What it was | a brawl, cause unknown (Reuters, TASS, iDNES.cz) | attempted terror, aimed at a crash (The Guardian, iDNES.cz, The Independent) |
| Who stopped him | "on-duty Flydubai crew traveling on the flight" (TASS) | a passenger who broke in with a crew member (The Guardian) |
| Where he is now | nothing in the reports we hold | arrested in Saudi Arabia (Netanyahu, via The Guardian and Life.ru) |
What the headlines chose. Reuters says "brawl between pilots" with no attribution. The Jerusalem Post calls him the "hijacking pilot" in its own voice. The Independent puts the terror label on Israel.
The fallout. Transport minister Miri Regev ordered flydubai flights to Israel halted because the pilot is Omani, The Jerusalem Post reports, citing sources.
Not settled - Why he did it. Only Israeli officials say he meant to crash the plane, and Netanyahu hedged: "it appears". - The arrest. No Saudi official confirms it in any report we hold. - The descent. Only MSNBC gives a figure: 14,000 feet in 30 seconds, from flight-tracking data. - The victim. No report names either pilot or says how badly the stabbed pilot is hurt.
This story is about a knife attack in the cockpit of a Dubai airline's flight to Israel, and what it does to Israel's ties with the Gulf.
How it got here. Israel and the United Arab Emirates set up diplomatic relations under the Abraham Accords, signed at the White House in September 2020. Bahrain signed at the same time; Morocco and Sudan followed. Direct flights between the Gulf and Tel Aviv began soon after. Flydubai, a low-cost airline owned by the government of Dubai, is one of the carriers on the route. The Gaza war that followed the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023 strained these ties, but the UAE did not cut them. Welt notes the third anniversary of 7 October is days away.
The actors. - Flydubai runs the flight and speaks for the crew. - Israel's government: Benjamin Netanyahu is prime minister, Israel Katz defence minister, Miri Regev transport minister. Regev's ministry decides which foreign airlines fly into Ben Gurion airport. - Saudi Arabia is where the plane came down. It has no diplomatic relations with Israel. Bringing it into normalisation has been a stated aim of Israeli and US governments for years. - Oman is the pilot's country, according to sources cited by The Jerusalem Post. Oman has no formal relations with Israel either.
What is at stake. The Jerusalem Post reports that flydubai's agreement requires its pilots on Israeli routes to come from countries that have normalised relations with Israel, and Oman has not. If Israel's reading holds, this is a security case that could close Gulf routes. The Jerusalem Post already carries a debate on whether Israelis should fly their own airlines. If the airline's reading holds, it is a crew failure with no political motive. Either way, the rule on pilots' nationality is now being tested.
Where it stands. The passengers are back in Israel. The Jerusalem Post reports Netanyahu met one of them at the airport. LBCI, citing Yedioth Ahronoth, reports that the Mossad vetted the crew of a replacement flydubai flight. No Saudi or Emirati official is quoted in any report we hold.

What is being argued about
- Whether the cockpit attack was a brawl or an attempted terror attack
- Who overpowered the attacking pilot: off-duty airline crew or Israeli passengers
- Israel's reported halt of flydubai flights over the pilot's Omani nationality
- What Saudi Arabia has and has not confirmed
