Fox News calls Christa Pike a 'teen killer', the Times 'Tennessee's lone woman on death row' as a court halts her execution

A federal appeals court stopped Tennessee's first execution of a woman in about 200 years on the day it was due. Four reports agree on that. They differ on what to call her, how close the stay came to the execution, and what the court decided.

What happened. On Wednesday, 30 September, the US Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit halted Christa Pike's execution. She was due to die that day. All four reports we hold say so.

What they call her. Fox News's headline says "Teen killer". The New York Times's headline says "Tennessee's Lone Woman on Death Row" and gives the crime in the text: she "tortured and murdered a classmate in 1995." The Washington Post and The Hill use her name. None of the four names the classmate.

How close it came.

Outlet Margin given
The Hill (text) "around an hour before"
The Hill (headline) "with hours to spare"
The Washington Post "with hours to spare"
Fox News, The New York Times no margin given

The Hill's headline and its own text disagree.

What the court said. Only The Hill quotes the order. It calls it a short stay "to properly analyze the parties' fully briefed arguments and resolve the issues on the merits." Only Fox News gives a vote: "a 2-1 split decision." No other report we hold confirms the split.

What is not settled. - What issues the court will now weigh. No report we hold says. - How long the stay lasts. - Whether Tennessee will appeal. No report quotes the state or Pike's lawyers. - What Reuters and MSNBC reported. We could not read them.

What this is about. Tennessee was due to execute Christa Pike, the only woman on its death row, on 30 September 2026. A federal appeals court stopped the execution that day.

How it got here. Pike was convicted of killing a classmate in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1995, when she was a teenager. The New York Times says she tortured and murdered the classmate. None of the reports we hold names the victim. Pike was sentenced to death and has been on death row for about three decades while her appeals ran. Tennessee paused executions in 2022 after problems with how its lethal-injection drugs were tested. It resumed them in 2025. The Tennessee Supreme Court then set Pike's execution date. The New York Times says she would have been the first woman executed in the state in 200 years. Fox News says over 200 years.

Who is involved. - Tennessee. Its attorney general and prison system carry out death sentences and defend them in court. - Pike's lawyers. They brought the challenge the court is now weighing. The reports we hold do not say what it argues. - The 6th Circuit. This federal appeals court hears cases from Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan. Only the US Supreme Court sits above it.

What is at stake. If the stay is lifted, Tennessee can set a new date. It would then execute a woman for the first time in about two centuries. If the court rules for Pike on the merits, the sentence may change, or the way it is carried out. The losing side can ask the Supreme Court to step in.

Where it stands. The execution is off for now. The Hill quotes the court as saying it needs time to "resolve the issues on the merits." No report we hold gives a date for that ruling.

What is being argued about

  • What to call her: 'teen killer' or 'lone woman on death row'
  • How close the stay came: 'around an hour' or 'hours to spare'
  • What the court decided, and by what vote
  • The victim, named in none of the four reports

The only report to give a vote: "a 2-1 split decision". Its headline calls Pike a "Teen killer".
Convicted Tennessee killer Christa Pike has been spared at the last minute from becoming the first woman executed in the state since the early 1800s after the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a stay Wednesday morning. In a 2-1 split decision, the court issued a stay "until further notice" as the court weighs motions filed by Pike's attorneys and the Tennessee Attorney General's Office. The state immediately appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, seeking to have the stay lifted. Pike, 50, was 18 in 1995 when she, her boyfriend and another person beat, kicked and stabbed their 19-year-old
