FundingNPR is a nonprofit membership corporation (501(c)(3); EIN 52-0907625) owned/governed by its member stations, not by government. In its own words: "NPR receives only about 1% of its operating budget directly from the federal government" (grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and federal agencies). About 30% of NPR's funding comes from programming fees paid mostly by its 246 member stations; those individual member stations receive on average about 13% of their own budgets from CPB. Remaining revenue is corporate sponsorship, donations/individual contributions, and endowment returns. Direct CPB appropriations to NPR itself ended in 2025 following a federal rescissions package/executive action. 2023 total revenue was reported at $318.7 million with an endowment of $342.3 million.
In its own wordsDescribes itself as: "NPR's Ethics Handbook states as its Independence principle: "To secure the public's trust, we must make it clear that our primary allegiance is to the public... Decisions about what we cover and how we do our work are made by our journalists, not by those who provide NPR with financial support" and "Under no circumstances do we skew our reports for personal gain, to help NPR's bottom line or to please those who fund us."."
