The Times says Houthi attacks; the Post says attacks and "soaring demand in China"
Brent is climbing back toward $100. Three of the nine reports we hold name a cause, and they do not name the same one. Trump says prices "will drop precipitously" when the Iran war is won; the Times says analysts expect them elevated for the rest of the year.
The price is agreed. Brent crude is climbing back toward $100 a barrel. The New York Times carries the climb twice; the Washington Post carries it through to the pump, where drivers are "in for more pain". No report we hold points the other way.
The cause is not. Three reports name what is pushing it. They do not agree.
| Outlet | What it says is pushing the price |
|---|---|
| The New York Times | "Following Houthi Attacks" — the attacks alone |
| The Washington Post | "Fresh attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and soaring demand in China" |
| Fox News | "Houthi missiles and drones struck Aramco facilities across Saudi Arabia", squeezing two chokepoints |
Where it goes next splits the same way. The Hill quotes Trump on Truth Social: oil "will drop precipitously... when we WIN the war with Iran". The New York Times says analysts expect Brent "to remain elevated for the rest of the year". MS NOW, MSNBC's news site, makes the price a broken promise — the administration "said to expect cheaper gasoline by Labor Day. Oops."
Two figures, one report each. The Saudi authorities said "dozens" were injured; nobody hurt is named anywhere. The American strategic reserve fell 1.2 million barrels, its lowest since 1982.
Not settled. No report separates how much of the rise is the attacks and how much is Chinese demand. None gives a price at the pump. None puts a figure or an analyst against Trump's forecast. The only line we have from Reuters is its headline.
What this is about: oil prices are rising because a war involving Iran is putting at risk the sea routes that carry Gulf oil to the rest of the world.
How it got here
- 2014–15: The Houthis, an armed movement from northern Yemen, took the capital, Sanaa. In March 2015 Saudi Arabia led a military coalition against them. Iran backs the Houthis; Saudi Arabia and Iran have been regional rivals for decades.
- September 2019: Drones and missiles hit Saudi Aramco's Abqaiq and Khurais oil plants. The Houthis claimed the attack. The United States and Saudi Arabia blamed Iran, which denied it. It showed how exposed Saudi oil sites are.
- Since November 2023: The Houthis have attacked shipping in the Red Sea. They say it is in support of Gaza, after the war there that followed the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023.
- June 2025: Israel and Iran fought an air war, and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites.
- Now: The reports we hold describe an "Iran war" that "drags on", with Gulf states hit by Iran's retaliation. They do not say when the current war began, and we do not state it.
Where the oil passes
- The Strait of Hormuz, between Iran and Oman, is the only sea exit from the Gulf. Iran controls its northern shore.
- Bab el-Mandeb, off Yemen, is the southern entrance to the Red Sea. The Houthis sit beside it.
If either one closes, tankers have to take longer routes or cannot leave the Gulf at all.
The other pieces
- Brent crude is the benchmark price for oil traded around the world. Petrol prices follow it.
- The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is the US government's emergency oil stock. It was set up in 1975, after the 1973 Arab oil embargo, to cushion shocks like this one.
What is at stake: higher prices at the pump and renewed inflation, and in the US, the political cost of both for the administration. How much longer the war goes on decides which way prices move.
Where it stands: Saudi Arabia says it will retaliate against the Houthis. Iran is trying to hold Hormuz with a "restricted zone". Gulf states are looking for routes that avoid the strait. Our reports give no date for the war to end.
What is being argued about
- What is pushing Brent back toward $100
- Whether winning the Iran war would bring pump prices down
- Attacks on Saudi facilities and on two shipping chokepoints
- The American strategic reserve at its lowest since 1982
