Big Bend: both reports carry the pause, neither reports the other's measure of it

The Hill scopes the pause to two named projects and a date. Axios scopes it to roughly 600 miles and a restraining order, then leads on construction going ahead. We hold neither court document.

Both reports carry the pause. The Hill says CBP told Federal District Judge Jason Pulliam it would pause all ground-disturbing activity for the Big Bend 2 and 4 Projects until 30 September 2026, "to allow for additional public engagement." Axios says a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order over roughly 600 miles of border, lasting only through the end of this month. This is not stopped against proceeding: Axios carries the pause and the plan to build in the same piece.

Where the accounts differ

The Hill Axios
What is paused Big Bend 2 and 4 projects roughly 600 miles of border
Until 30 September 2026 "the end of this month"
How CBP told the judge it would pause a judge issued a restraining order
The work "border wall" plus "additional border construction" patrol roads and vehicle barriers, no 30-foot wall
Local voices none four named, three quoted

The two bias readings differ on one count. One found four local officials named in the Axios report, the other three quoted by name. Both hold: commissioner Deirdre Hisler is cited for figures, not quoted. Neither report quotes a landowner; Axios says they were not invited.

Not settled. We hold no court document, only two readings of one. Whether the pause is CBP's own commitment recorded in court or a judge's order, and whether the two scopes overlap, our reports cannot resolve. Our copy of The Hill's piece runs about 400 characters, so most detail above is Axios's.

What this is about: the federal government wants to build border barriers through Big Bend, a remote stretch of West Texas, and the people who live there are trying to slow it down.

How it got here

  • The US-Mexico border runs about 2,000 miles, Axios notes. In Texas the border is the Rio Grande. At Big Bend the river makes a wide turn through desert and canyon country.
  • The land around it holds Big Bend National Park, a state park and a wildlife area. Local officials told Axios that tourism is what the economy there runs on.
  • A border wall was Donald Trump's signature promise in his first term (2017–2021). President Biden halted wall building when he took office in 2021. Trump returned to the White House in January 2025 and restarted it.
  • Axios reports that CBP had built less than 200 miles of wall as of last week. It plans hundreds more miles of 30-foot steel barrier, plus roads and vehicle barriers inside the Big Bend parks.

Who is involved

  • Customs and Border Protection (CBP), part of the Department of Homeland Security, builds and polices the barrier. A CBP spokesperson ties the work to the president's goal of "zero illegal border crossings".
  • Texas county officials. In rural Texas the county judge and the sheriff are the top elected officials. They are the only locals CBP has met with.
  • Private landowners. Much of the Texas border is privately owned. The government can take land for public use through eminent domain, with a court setting the payment. Axios says CBP has made clear that landowners who refuse to grant access risk exactly that.
  • A federal district court, the first level of federal courts, where Judge Jason Pulliam is handling the challenge.

What is at stake: whether the government builds through protected parkland and private ranches, and whether the people there get a say. Axios says the same pattern has played out in Arizona, where the Tohono O'odham Nation has gone to court.

Where it stands: construction is paused until the end of September 2026. After that the pause runs out.

What is being argued about

  • Whether construction at Big Bend is stopped or going ahead
  • What the pause covers: two named projects, or 600 miles
  • Whether a judge ordered the pause or CBP volunteered it
  • Whether the paused work at Big Bend is wall at all

The bias in this coverageBias

Both reports carry the pause; they measure it differently

One scopes the order to two named projects and a date; the other to roughly 600 miles of border and the end of this month. This is not stopped against proceeding — the longer report states the pause and the plan to build in the same piece. We hold no report containing the order itself, so the two scopes cannot be reconciled from what we have.

2 reports in the story 2 reports that carry the pause 0 reports that carry the order's own text 2 reports giving an end date for the pause

One report was in the room; the other read the docket

The longer report names four local officials with their titles and quotes two of them at length. The shorter one quotes the court record and nobody else. That is partly a difference in length, not only in method: one is stored at about 5,100 characters, the other at under 400.

Claims and verdicts

misleading Big Bend construction is stopped by court order, yet the government says it is going ahead.
The Hill has ground-disturbing work on the Big Bend 2 and 4 projects paused until 30 September 2026; Axios has CBP telling county officials a stretch of more than 200 miles is "not negotiable". Both can be true at once: the pause is dated and narrow, and the "not negotiable" stretch runs Hudspeth to Presidio, not the parks.
