Fox says Bartiromo is out. Her lawyer says she is still employed
Four US outlets, four words for one event: firing, termination, departure, removal. One quotes Fox's release, one quotes the attorney, none carries both — and none has Fox answering the denial.
What Fox published. Washington Examiner is the only report we hold that quotes the release: "effective today, Maria Bartiromo is no longer with Fox News Media". Those words say she has gone. They do not say who ended the job, or how.
What her lawyer says. The Washington Post carries the reply — Bartiromo is "still employed" — and is the only report that says the attorney suggests legal action.
The verb is the disagreement. Four reports, four words for one event.
| outlet | what it calls it | who it names as source | whose words it quotes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washington Examiner | firing | Fox's release | the release |
| The Washington Post | reports she was fired | reports | the attorney |
| CNBC | reports of termination | reports | neither |
| MSNBC | departure; the network "removed" her | the network | neither |
Our two blind passes split once. One counted two of four reports giving the lawyer a neutral verb; the other counted three. The report between them is Washington Examiner, whose headline says "denies" and whose lede says she "fired back".
What none of it settles. No report we hold has Fox answering the denial: 0 of 4. None carries both sides' exact words. We hold no report from Fox News' own newsroom, so we cannot say how it reported itself. Only MSNBC says she is off the lineup; "still employed" does not answer that. All four reports are a headline and a sentence or two, so this reads ledes, not articles.
What this is about. Fox News says one of its best-known hosts has left. She says she has not. The reason Fox acted is reported, but not confirmed by either side.
How it got here. - Maria Bartiromo is a financial journalist. She spent about two decades at CNBC. She joined Fox Business in 2013. - She went on to host three shows across Fox News and Fox Business, including Sunday Morning Futures and Mornings with Maria. - Both networks belong to Fox Corporation, which the Murdoch family controls. - After the 2020 election, Fox aired false claims that voting machines had changed the result. Dominion Voting Systems sued Fox, and Bartiromo was named in the suit. Fox settled in April 2023 for $787.5 million, MSNBC notes. - Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025. MSNBC describes Bartiromo as close to him. - On Thursday 3 September 2026, Fox announced she was "no longer with" the company. It gave no reason. - That evening Status, a media newsletter, reported that she had passed written internal Fox guidance to the White House in July. Status did not name its sources. CNN and The New York Times later reported the same, each citing one unnamed person. Neither Fox nor Bartiromo has confirmed this in any report we hold. - On Friday 4 September, her lawyer said she is still employed.
Who is involved.
| who | why they are in it |
|---|---|
| Maria Bartiromo | the host whose job is in dispute |
| Fox News Media | her employer, which announced she had gone |
| Bryan Freedman | her lawyer, who has also represented Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly and Don Lemon |
| Donald Trump | publicly praised her after the announcement. The White House is where the guidance is reported to have gone |
What is at stake. - Her contract. Status says she broke her employment terms. Her lawyer says the reports are false and points to court. - The network and the White House. The unconfirmed account says a Fox decision about its coverage was passed to the president's staff.
Where it stands. The latest reports we hold are from 4 September. In them, Fox has not answered the denial and no lawsuit has been filed. We hold nothing later.
