Fox News says 15 shot, Breitbart says 38 — one counted a park, the other a city
Two reports on the same Chicago holiday weekend, two casualty counts, and neither carries the other's number. Neither gives a police source for its figure.
Two numbers, two windows. Fox News reports 15 people shot and one dead in the Washington Park shooting. Breitbart reports at least 38 shot, eight fatally, across Chicago over Labor Day weekend. Each report says what it is counting. Neither carries the other's figure.
| Fox News | Breitbart | |
|---|---|---|
| What is counted | one shooting, Washington Park | every shooting in the city |
| Over | a single incident | the holiday weekend |
| Shot | 15 | at least 38 |
| Killed | 1 | 8 |
| Hedged | no | "at least" |
| Who is named | Gov. JB Pritzker, Mayor Brandon Johnson | "Democrat-run Chicago" |
| Source for the figure | none given | none given |
These are not rival counts. Washington Park sits inside the weekend Breitbart totals, so its 15 would be part of the 38. The numbers differ because the things counted differ, not because either outlet disputes the other.
Politics named, people not. Both reports leave whoever fired out of the sentence: people "were shot", and a shooting "left 15 people shot and one dead". Both name politics instead — a governor and a mayor in one, the party running the city in the other. Neither names anyone who was shot or killed.
Not settled. No report we hold gives a police source for either figure. None carries both counts. The Fox News piece is a pastor's reaction, not a count of casualties. We hold no third report on either the shooting or the weekend.
What this is about: how many people were shot in Chicago over the 2026 Labor Day weekend, and why two outlets gave different answers.
How it got here
- Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September. In 2026 that was 7 September, so the long weekend ran from 5 to 7 September.
- For years, Chicago news outlets have kept running counts of shootings over holiday weekends, especially Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Those totals cover the whole city over several days. They are not the same as a count for one incident.
- Washington Park is a neighbourhood and a large public park on Chicago's South Side. The Fox News report counts one shooting there. Breitbart counts every shooting in the city over the weekend.
- Chicago crime has been a national political argument for more than a decade. In 2025, President Donald Trump pointed to violence in the city when he pressed to send federal forces in. Illinois and Chicago leaders opposed that, and the fight went to court.
Who is involved
- JB Pritzker, a Democrat, has been Governor of Illinois since 2019.
- Brandon Johnson, a Democrat, has been Mayor of Chicago since May 2023.
- Chicago has had Democratic mayors without a break since 1931. That is why "Democrat-run" is a label critics use, and why the Fox News report names the governor and the mayor.
- The Chicago Police Department keeps the official record of shootings. Neither report cites it.
What is at stake
Holiday-weekend totals are often used as evidence in the argument over whether Democratic city governments can control violence. How a figure is counted matters: which area, which days, and whether it comes from police or a newsroom's own tally. A one-incident count and a whole-city count can both be accurate and still get used to tell different stories. Whether violence in the city is rising or falling is itself disputed, and neither report gives a trend.
Where it stands
We hold two reports, both published on 8 September. We do not hold a police figure, a list of the victims, or any report on whether anyone has been arrested.
What is being argued about
- What each number counts, and over how long
- Whether 15 and 38 contradict each other
- Who is named as acting, and who is only counted
- Where either figure came from
