Fox News says 'Epic Fury' has degraded Iran's military; IRNA says Iran controls Hormuz

Brent crude passed $100 on Wednesday, the first time since late July. Nine reports on the sixth month of the war, and not one gives a number for anyone killed.

Middle East on brink of World War III, warns Iranian lawmaker among escalating tensions - report as published by The Jerusalem Post · seen at The Jerusalem Post

The price. Brent crude passed $100 a barrel on Wednesday, the first time since late July. UPI says it "again surpassed $100"; Reuters says it "hovers near $100"; The Independent sets it against $61 before the war and a $138 high in April. Three of the nine reports we hold carry a figure for crude.

The name. No two outlets call the war the same thing.

Outlet What it calls it What it asserts
Fox News "Trump's pressure campaign", "Operation Epic Fury" the operation "has degraded entire categories of Iran's military" — no source, no measure
The Independent "Trump's war in Iran", "the war he started in late February" the cost, in oil, gas, inflation, bond yields and mortgage rates
UPI "the Iran war" Iran and the United States "continue to trade attacks"
Gulf News "US-Iran conflict" a headline for UAE readers; we hold no text
IRNA "the war against Iran" Iran "exercises effective control" of the Strait of Hormuz

Said, and claimed. The Independent puts the American tally in "said" and the Iranian tally in "claimed" inside one sentence: five Iranian tankers destroyed; two American vessels and eight tankers hit. No other report we hold repeats or tests either number.

Not settled. Who holds Hormuz: the only account is a Revolutionary Guard spokesman's, carried by Iran's state agency. Netanyahu, quoted by LBCI while inspecting troops in southern Syria, says Israel is "very close" to bringing down the Iranian government; no other report we hold carries that. And no report we hold gives any number for people killed or hurt.

What it is about. The United States and Iran have been at war for six months, and the fighting has moved onto the sea lane that carries much of the world's oil.

How it got here. The war began in late February 2026 — The Independent calls it "the war he started in late February", meaning US President Donald Trump. In April Iran shut the Strait of Hormuz; Brent crude, the benchmark oil price, rose to a high of $138 a barrel, against about $61 before the war. A prolonged ceasefire followed and the price fell back. The United States and Iran announced an interim peace agreement in June, The Independent reports; it later collapsed. This week's exchange of attacks on tankers is the war returning to the water.

Who is in it. Trump commands US forces in the region through Central Command; Marco Rubio is his secretary of state. On the Iranian side the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, a branch of Iran's armed forces answering to the supreme leader, runs the campaign at sea and speaks for it. Israel, under prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has its own fight with Iran, and had troops in southern Syria this week. Yemen's Houthis, whom The Independent describes as an Iranian proxy, have struck Saudi energy sites. Jordan hosts a base used by US forces. Oman, which faces Iran across the strait, is the long-standing go-between and is mediating now.

What is at stake. Hormuz is the only sea exit from the Gulf, Iran on one shore, Oman and the UAE on the other. A fifth of the world's oil passed through it in peacetime, The Independent reports. Squeeze it and the cost moves everywhere: Qatar has suspended LNG cargoes to Europe and Asia, and Britain's energy regulator has warned the household price cap will rise if the level holds. A Guards spokesman says the war could end if Washington lifts the blockade on Yemen, releases $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets and leaves Iran's nuclear and missile programmes alone.

Where it stands. Shipping through the strait is severely constrained again, and no report we hold gives a casualty figure.

What is being argued about

  • What to call a war in its sixth month
  • Who controls the Strait of Hormuz
  • Oil past $100, and what it puts on a household bill
  • What is counted, and who is not

The bias in this coverageBias

A war priced in barrels and therms

Nine reports, and the numbers in them are oil, gas, inflation, bond yields and mortgage rates. Three carry a dollar figure for crude. None names or counts a single person killed or injured in six months of fighting.

9 reports we hold on this 3 reports carrying an oil price 0 reports naming or counting anyone hurt 3 reports carrying an Iranian voice

Said, and claimed

One report puts the American tally in "said" and the Iranian tally in "claimed" in the same sentence, and neither tally is checked anywhere in what we hold. Two sides give ship counts; no report we hold tests either. Six of the nine reports reach us as a headline and a line or less, so most of this coverage is a price move with a war attached.

1 reports using "said" for one side and "claimed" for the other 2 ship tallies asserted, none checked in our reports 6 reports we hold as a headline and a line or less
Scored without the mastheads. Where the two passes differ, both are kept.

true Brent crude passed $100 a barrel on 9 September, the first time since late July.
UPI, Reuters and The Independent each report the $100 level being crossed on Wednesday, and UPI and The Independent both date the previous crossing to July. No report we hold gives a different figure or date.

unverified The US military destroyed five Iranian tankers carrying crude after Iranian ballistic missiles were fired at a US Navy warship, and Iran says it struck two American vessels and eight tankers.
Only The Independent carries the tanker figures, attributing the first to the US military and the second to an Iranian claim. No other report we hold on this event repeats or contradicts either number.

unverified Iran exercises effective control over the Strait of Hormuz.
The claim comes from one source, an IRGC spokesperson quoted by Iran's state agency IRNA, which also describes a parallel legal and diplomatic track through Oman. The Independent says Iran shut the strait in April but does not say who controls it now, and no other report we hold tests the assertion.
