Russian outlets call it "constructive and very frank"; Kyiv says the Kremlin "shows no readiness to make concessions"

The call. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told journalists on 8 September that Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump had spoken by telephone for exactly one hour. He said the two went over the Moscow and Kyiv trips made by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, and that Putin set out Russia's reading of the front. Ushakov also said the conversation was confidential, and then described it.

What varies is the adjective.

Not settled. Whether the assurance about Europe was given, and in those words. What Trump said back. What was agreed: no report we hold names an outcome. We hold no American, Ukrainian government or European account of this hour — which is not to say none was published. It is what reached us.

What this is about. The United States is trying to broker an end to Russia's war in Ukraine, and this was a phone call between the two presidents about that effort.

How it got here. - 2014: Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Fighting began in the eastern Donbas region between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists. - 24 February 2022: Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Moscow calls it a "special military operation" and says it acted against NATO expansion and to protect Russian speakers. Kyiv and most Western governments call it an unprovoked war of aggression. Russia still holds a large part of Ukraine's south and east. - January 2025: Donald Trump began his second term. He had promised to end the war quickly, and he reopened direct contact with Vladimir Putin, which Washington had largely cut off after the invasion. That included a summit in Alaska in August 2025. - This month: Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travelled to Moscow and to Kyiv. Obozrevatel reports that Witkoff has raised the prospect of three-way talks between the US, Ukraine and Russia.

The actors. - Vladimir Putin has led Russia, as president or prime minister, since 1999. Yuri Ushakov is his foreign-policy aide, and in practice the Kremlin's voice on these calls. - Donald Trump is casting himself as the mediator. A Kyiv analyst told Obozrevatel that the push is tied to the US midterm elections in November. That is his reading, not an established fact. - Ukraine, led by Volodymyr Zelensky, is the country being fought over. It was not on the call. - Europe's governments fund and arm Ukraine, and several border Russia. That is why an assurance about Europe matters to them.

What is at stake. A settlement would decide who governs the occupied land and what security guarantees Ukraine gets. It would also shape how far Europe can trust Moscow. Without one, the fighting goes on.

Where it stands. No ceasefire is in place. The Institute for the Study of War, as cited by Obozrevatel, sees no sign that the Kremlin is ready to compromise. The only account we hold of this call comes from Moscow.
