Greek daily calls Elif Eralp 'Berlin's new mayor'; taz says talks on a left coalition only start next week
Five reports from 27 September on Die Linke's bid to lead Berlin. One says it has already happened. One says the talks that would decide it have not begun. None gives a vote share or a seat count.
The split. Efimerida ton Syntakton, an Athens daily, calls Elif Eralp "the new mayor of Berlin" in its headline and says she "won the battle of the elections". taz, a Berlin daily, says exploratory talks on a left alliance begin "in the new week". Welt writes of a socialist mayor as something that "would be".
| Outlet | What it says | Done or not yet? |
|---|---|---|
| Efimerida ton Syntakton | Eralp is "the new mayor of Berlin" | Done |
| taz (news) | The Greens and the SPD accepted the Left's invitation to talks | Not yet |
| Welt (comment) | A socialist mayor "would be bad news for Berlin, but a chance" | Not yet |
| taz (column) | Anti-fascism is an argument for a Left government | Not yet |
| taz (first person) | An SPD member voted Left for the first time | Not yet |
Opinion outweighs news. Three of the five reports are comment or first-person pieces. Two make the case for a Left-led government, for opposite reasons. The taz column cites anti-fascism. Welt says a Left-led government would end the CDU's "Brandmauer" and make "non-left majorities" possible.
No party speaks. None of the five reports quotes the Left, the Greens, the SPD or the CDU.
What is not settled. - Whether Eralp will be mayor. Only the Greek report says she is. - Whether the Greens and the SPD have agreed to talks. Only taz reports it. - The result. No report we hold gives a vote share or a seat count. - Eralp's age and background. Only Efimerida ton Syntakton gives them.
What this is about. Who will govern Berlin after its state election, and whether Die Linke, the Left party, will lead the city for the first time.
How it got here. Berlin is a city and also one of Germany's 16 states. Its head of government is the Governing Mayor, who is elected by the state parliament, the Abgeordnetenhaus. No party governs alone, so the mayor is whoever can build a majority coalition.
The SPD led Berlin from 2001 to 2023. For much of that time it governed with the Left, and later with the Left and the Greens together. The 2021 state election was run so badly that Berlin's constitutional court ordered it held again. The CDU came first at the re-run in February 2023. Kai Wegner of the CDU then became mayor in a coalition with the SPD. The next regular election was due in September 2026.
Nationally, Friedrich Merz of the CDU has been chancellor since May 2025. He governs with the SPD.
The actors. - Die Linke chose Elif Eralp as its lead candidate. It has been in government in Berlin before, but only as a junior partner. - The SPD and the Greens are the partners a left coalition would need. - The CDU holds the mayor's office. A party resolution bars it from coalitions with the AfD and with Die Linke. Its refusal to work with the AfD is known as the "Brandmauer", the firewall.
What is at stake. Berlin would get its first government led by the Left. Welt argues that this would also weaken the CDU's case for the firewall. That is Welt's view, not a settled consequence.
Where it stands. taz reports that exploratory talks begin in the coming week. These talks are the informal stage before formal coalition negotiations. No coalition has been agreed, and the parliament has not elected a mayor.
What is being argued about
- Whether Elif Eralp is already Berlin's mayor or a candidate whose talks have not begun
- Whether the SPD and the Greens will join a Left-led coalition
- What a Left-led Berlin would mean for the CDU's firewall against the AfD
- Why some SPD voters switched to the Left
