Greek daily quotes the Commission rejecting Trump's diesel ban; Frankfurter Allgemeine says things are moving behind the scenes
Washington wants Europe's emergency diesel stocks opened and says it will stop exports if they stay shut. Four reports from four countries agree on the threat. They disagree on whether the EU is resisting or giving way, and on whether there is a shortage at all.
The threat. The US administration wants Europe's diesel reserves released, and threatens to stop diesel exports if they are not. The Frankfurter Allgemeine and Brussels Signal both report the export threat. Libération's opening says Washington is urging Europeans to use their strategic diesel stocks.
Who is being asked. The Frankfurter Allgemeine says the demand is aimed at Germany and France. Brussels Signal says "Europe". Libération says "les Européens".
How the EU answered. The four accounts differ:
| Outlet | The EU's response | Is there a shortage? |
|---|---|---|
| Efimerida ton Syntakton | Commission spokesperson: "we reject any ban"; the EU "will answer united" | not addressed |
| Libération | headline: the EU "brushes aside" the US threats | a global surge in pump prices |
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | "the EU reacts"; "behind the scenes things are now moving" | "there is no shortage" |
| Brussels Signal | Europe is "pressed" to open its stocks | "record diesel prices" |
Who spoke for the EU. Only Efimerida ton Syntakton names the body that answered: the European Commission. Libération credits "the EU" without saying which institution.
What is not settled. - Whether any government will open its stocks. The governments hold the stocks, not the Commission. - Who is "moving behind the scenes". The Frankfurter Allgemeine does not say. - Whether supply is short. The Frankfurter Allgemeine says no and Brussels Signal says prices are at a record. Neither gives a figure, and none of the four reports gives a price or a stock level.
What this is about. The United States is using its diesel exports as leverage to make European governments release fuel they hold for emergencies.
How it got here. Europe refines less diesel than it burns, so it has long imported the difference. In February 2023 the EU banned imports of refined oil products from Russia after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. That ban pushed European buyers further towards other suppliers, including the United States. Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025 and has since used trade threats in disputes with the EU. Libération says pump prices are now rising worldwide and that the major economies are trying to ease the market.
Who the actors are. - The US administration supplies some of Europe's diesel imports and is setting the condition. - Member-state governments hold the emergency stocks. EU law requires each member state to keep reserves of crude oil and fuel for a supply crisis. The decision to release them is national, which is why one report names Germany and France. - The European Commission handles trade for the whole Union, because trade policy is an EU competence under the treaties. It speaks when the threat is to trade, but it does not control the national stocks. - The G7: France holds the presidency this year. Libération reports that Emmanuel Macron is chairing a video call of G7 leaders on Friday about fuel.
What is at stake. If the EU holds firm and Washington follows through, diesel imports could be cut while prices are already high. If governments release their stocks, they draw down the reserve that exists for a real supply crisis. Either way, the outcome shows whether the Union answers Washington with one voice or capital by capital.
Where it stands. The Commission has rejected any ban. Whether the governments that hold the stocks will hold that line is not yet reported.
What is being argued about
- Whether the EU rejected the US demand or is quietly moving towards it
- Whether Europe has a diesel shortage or only high prices
- Whether the demand is aimed at Europe as a whole or at Germany and France
- Which EU body speaks for the Union when the stocks are held by national governments
