Heidenau's Stolpersteine: Der Standard says 'a CDU/AfD motion' stopped them, Gazeta Wyborcza says 'AfD and CDU councillors'

Councillors in Heidenau, a town in Saxony, voted to stop seven more brass plaques for victims of Nazism. Three outlets agree that the CDU and the AfD did it together. They differ on which party they name first, and on who objects.

What happened. Councillors in Heidenau, a town in Saxony, passed a motion against new Stolpersteine, according to Der Standard, taz and Gazeta Wyborcza. Der Standard says it stopped seven more stones. Der Standard and Gazeta Wyborcza say the town will remember the victims at the cemetery instead.

Whose motion. All three outlets name both parties. Two put the CDU first. One puts the AfD first.

Outlet Who acted, in its words Who objects
Der Standard "Ein CDU/AfD-Antrag" (a CDU/AfD motion) Karin Prien: "Skandal!"
taz "CDU- und AfD-Politiker" (CDU and AfD politicians) Karin Prien: "Das ist ein Skandal"
Gazeta Wyborcza "radni AfD i CDU" (AfD and CDU councillors) "politicians and Jewish communities", none named

Who objects. Karin Prien, the federal education minister, is a CDU member. Der Standard's headline says she rebuked her own party. Two of the three reports quote a critic, and in both it is Prien.

What the victims are called. Der Standard writes of "the murdered Jews". Gazeta Wyborcza writes of "victims of Hitler's rule".

What is not settled. - Gazeta Wyborcza says Jewish communities criticised the decision. It names none, and we hold no report that quotes one. - No report gives the vote count or the date of the meeting. - No report quotes a councillor who backed the motion, so we do not know the council's reasons. - No report names the seven people the stones would have marked.

What this is about. A town council in eastern Germany voted to stop new plaques for victims of Nazism being set into its pavements. The CDU voted for the motion alongside the AfD.

What Stolpersteine are. Stolpersteine, or "stumbling stones", are small brass plaques set into the pavement. Each one sits outside the last home a person chose to live in before the Nazis deported them, murdered them or drove them out. Each carries one name. The German artist Gunter Demnig began the project in the 1990s. Stones are usually laid at the request of relatives or local groups. A town council can allow or refuse them on public ground. Some cities have argued over them before, over whether people should walk over the names.

Why the CDU and the AfD matter. The CDU is Germany's main centre-right party. It leads the federal government under Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The AfD is a national-right party. Saxony's domestic intelligence service classes the AfD's Saxon branch as right-wing extremist. The CDU has a standing party decision not to work with the AfD, often called the "firewall". The party has argued for years over whether that decision binds local councillors. The row flared nationally in January 2025, when a CDU motion passed the Bundestag with AfD votes.

Who the actors are. Heidenau is a small town just south-east of Dresden. Its councillors took the decision. Karin Prien is a CDU politician and has been federal minister of education since May 2025. She objected in public.

What is at stake. For the victims' memory: whether names are marked where people lived, or gathered at a cemetery. For the CDU: whether its line on the AfD holds below the national level.

Where it stands. The reports say the motion has passed. We hold no report of the council reconsidering it.

What is being argued about

  • Which party the outlets name first: the CDU in two, the AfD in one
  • A CDU federal minister calling her own party's local vote a scandal
  • Jewish communities said to object, but none named or quoted
  • Plaques in the street or a memorial at the cemetery

The bias in this coverageBias

Whose motion it was

All three reports name both parties, but two put the CDU first and one puts the AfD first. None gives the vote count or quotes a councillor who voted for the motion. Two reports make the federal education minister's objection their angle.

2 reports naming CDU first 1 reports naming AfD first 0 reports quoting a councillor who voted for it

Jewish communities are mentioned but not heard

One report says Jewish communities criticised the decision, but it names none and quotes none. One report calls the victims murdered Jews and another calls them victims of Hitler's rule. The seven people the stones would have named are not named in any report.

0 reports quoting a Jewish community 2 reports quoting the federal minister 7 stones blocked, per one report
