What the court did. HotNews.ro reports the Bucharest Tribunal placed Călin Georgescu under judicial control — "a fost eliberat", he was released — and names Cosmin Sterea Grossu, the court's president, as confirming it to HotNews. Magyar Nemzet, published 40 minutes later, headlines "Előzetesbe kerülhet a volt román elnökjelölt": the former Romanian presidential candidate may be remanded in custody. It names no court and no decision.

Whose account this runs on. Everything past the ruling comes from the prosecution file or from calls prosecutors intercepted. Digi24 keeps the conditional for the alleged fraud and names the prosecutors as the source of the word leader; HotNews.ro puts "Dovada" — the proof — in a headline whose text says the file says so.

Not settled. Whether he is at liberty or facing a cell. The €1.1 million account reaches us from two newsrooms reading one prosecution file, which is one account, not two. No report we hold quotes Georgescu or a lawyer answering any of it.

This is about what a Romanian court did on 22 September 2026 to Călin Georgescu, and why two newsrooms across a border describe it differently.

How it got here. Georgescu was an outsider who led the first round of Romania's presidential election on 24 November 2024. On 6 December 2024 Romania's Constitutional Court annulled that round before the run-off could be held, citing declassified intelligence files about the campaign. Georgescu denied wrongdoing, and the annulment is still contested in Romanian politics. He was barred from the rerun, which Nicușor Dan won in May 2025. He has held no office since. Today's news is a criminal case, and the reports we hold call it a new one, distinct from earlier proceedings against him.

The actors. DIICOT is Romania's prosecution directorate for organised crime and terrorism, and it is the body investigating — which is why Magyar Nemzet describes a fraud case run by the prosecutors against organised crime and terrorism. The Bucharest Tribunal is the court that ruled. Răzvan Leu, named by Digi24 and HotNews.ro, is the businessman from Buzău who complained. Judicial control, in Romanian criminal procedure, is a pre-trial measure short of custody: the accused stays out, under conditions imposed by the court. Pre-trial detention is the opposite outcome from the same hearing — which is precisely what the two accounts disagree about.

What is at stake. Whether Georgescu spends the case at liberty or in a cell. Beyond that, whether a man who topped a national vote and was then removed from the ballot is read outside Romania as released or as about to be jailed — a difference of one word in a headline, and of two very different stories.

Where it stands. Only the Romanian reports carry the transcripts. Only one report we hold carries the court's decision at all, and the only report from outside Romania points the other way.
