iDNES: American soldiers "on their way" to Lithuania. Rzeczpospolita, an hour earlier: Washington "has not yet decided" on its forces in Europe
Two reports twenty minutes apart read American intent on NATO's eastern flank in opposite directions. Vilnius says the soldiers are moving. Warsaw says nothing is settled. No American official speaks in either.
Vilnius: they are moving. iDNES.cz reports Lithuanian president Gitanas Nausėda saying American soldiers "jsou na cestě do Litvy" — are on their way to Lithuania. He thanked Donald Trump and his administration and called the step important not only for Lithuania but "pro bezpečnost celého regionu". The report rests on his word alone.
Warsaw: nothing is settled. Twenty minutes earlier, Rzeczpospolita reported that the meeting between Polish defence minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and US defence secretary Pete Hegseth had been called off. The stated reason was the Chinese president's visit to Washington. The paper then offers a second explanation, marked in its own headline as unofficial: the Americans may have postponed because they have "nie podjęli jeszcze decyzji, co do przyszłości swoich wojsk w Europie".
| iDNES.cz, 13:03 | Rzeczpospolita, 12:43 | |
|---|---|---|
| On American forces | on their way to Lithuania | future in Europe not yet decided |
| Source | President Nausėda, named | unofficial, unnamed |
| Hedged | no — stated flat in the headline | yes — "możliwe", and labelled unofficial |
What we cannot settle. No report we hold quotes a named American official on either side. The arrival has one source, a president; the hesitation has one source, unnamed. Nothing tells us how many soldiers, from where, or when they would arrive. Welt makes no troop claim at all — only its Warsaw correspondent saying the Russian threat is read there as independent of how the Ukraine war goes. Neither claim contradicts the other outright, and neither is confirmed.
What this is about. Whether the United States is adding soldiers to NATO's eastern edge or quietly reconsidering the ones already there — and two European capitals reading the same Tuesday in opposite directions.
How it got here. NATO was founded in 1949 as a military alliance whose members treat an attack on one as an attack on all. Poland joined in 1999 and Lithuania in 2004; both had spent the Cold War inside the Soviet bloc, and Lithuania was a Soviet republic until 1990. Lithuania's borders run against Belarus and against Kaliningrad, a piece of Russian territory cut off from the rest of Russia. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and invaded Ukraine in full in February 2022. Since then NATO has kept multinational troops in the Baltic states and Poland, with American forces rotating through both. How many American soldiers stand in Europe is decided in Washington; no European government has a vote on it.
Who is in it. Gitanas Nausėda has been Lithuania's president since 2019. Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz is Poland's defence minister; Pete Hegseth is the American defence secretary he was due to meet. Mateusz Morawiecki, whose association surfaces in the fourth report, was Poland's prime minister from 2017 to 2023.
What is at stake. Every European defence budget drafted this autumn assumes an answer to this question. If American forces thin out, European governments pay for the gap; if they reinforce, the pressure eases. Welt reports worries growing in Poland about escalation on the flank, and its correspondent says the threat is seen in Warsaw as unchanged by whatever happens in Ukraine.
Where it stands. One president says the soldiers are coming. One unnamed source says Washington has not chosen. Nobody American has said either on the record in anything we hold.
What is being argued about
- Whether the United States is reinforcing or drawing down NATO's eastern flank
- The cancelled meeting between Poland's defence minister and the US defence secretary
- How the threat from Russia is read in Warsaw, independent of the war in Ukraine
- A Polish proposal for compulsory defence training for school leavers
