iDNES says sabotage, Le Figaro says a malicious act — and 43 hurt, or 44
A train came off the rails near Rouen on Friday evening. By Saturday lunchtime six reports carried three counts of the hurt and four words for what happened.
The event. A regional train came off the rails on Friday evening on the line between Rouen and Caen, in Normandy. NOS puts the spot at Oissel-sur-Seine and is the only report we hold to name it.
The number. Digi24 and NOS both say 44 hurt, one of them critically. Le Figaro, publishing latest of the six at 13:16, says 43. No report we hold explains the revision, and none names anyone who was hurt.
The word. Four words for one cause, in four hours:
| Outlet | Hurt | Its word | Hedged? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digi24 | 44 | "act rău intenţionat" | yes, a police hypothesis |
| De Standaard | no figure | "mogelijk opzettelijk" | yes, citing Le Parisien |
| NOS | 44 | "waarschijnlijk sabotage" | yes, judicial sources |
| Libération | no figure | "aurait été provoqué" | yes, conditional |
| iDNES.cz | "dozens" | "Je to sabotáž" | no, stated flat |
| Le Figaro | 43 | "acte malveillant" | yes, a police source |
Not settled. Whether 43 or 44 were hurt. Whether the rail caused the derailment — NOS says that is still to be established officially. What it weighed: iDNES has the prosecutor confirming a piece of rail and giving no weight, and the 300 kilos comes only from Libération, in the conditional, and from Le Figaro quoting Hervé Morin. No report we hold names a suspect, a motive, or anyone as having put the rail there.
What this is about. A regional passenger train came off the rails near Rouen, in Normandy, on Friday 11 September 2026, and police are investigating whether someone caused it on purpose.
How it got here.
- The train. It was a TER, the regional service run by SNCF, France's state-owned rail operator. Since the regional reforms of the 2010s, France's regions pay for and organise these trains. SNCF runs them. The region of Normandy also took over its main intercity lines from the state in 2020. The derailment happened on the line between Rouen and Caen. NOS places it at Oissel-sur-Seine, just south of Rouen.
- The object on the track. On Friday evening, sources told French media that the train had hit a metal object lying on the rails. By Saturday, the Rouen prosecutor had confirmed that a piece of rail was found on the line.
- The earlier case. France has had sabotage on its railways before. On 26 July 2024, the day the Paris Olympics opened, coordinated arson attacks damaged the SNCF high-speed network. That is why a deliberate act is the first question now asked about any object found on a track.
The actors.
- The Rouen prosecutor runs the criminal case. In France, prosecutors direct police inquiries.
- The judicial police in Rouen are the investigators. Digi24 reports that they took over the case.
- Hervé Morin is president of the Normandy regional council. The region pays for the train, which is why he is speaking about it.
- SNCF runs the train and maintains the track.
What is at stake. The reports carry an 18-year-old woman in critical condition. If the rail was put there on purpose, this is a criminal case against someone who has not been identified. It would also raise the question of how open track can be guarded. If it was not deliberate, the question becomes how a piece of rail ended up on a working line.
Where it stands. As of Saturday, the prosecutor said the inquiry had turned up nothing new on how the rail got onto the track. None of the reports we hold names a suspect or a motive. None says it has been officially established that the rail caused the derailment. We do not know whether the case will stay in Rouen.

What is being argued about
- Three counts of the hurt across six reports: 44, 43 and "dozens"
- Sabotage stated flat in one headline, kept conditional in four reports
- The 300-kilo rail, carried by two French papers and not by the prosecutor
- What one report rules out: the driver was not under the influence
