Interfax says one tanker was hit and set on fire in Hormuz; Shargh says '2 maritime incidents'
Both cite the same UK maritime agency. One describes a strike and a fire. The other describes two incidents and gives no detail. Neither says who fired, names a ship or mentions a crew.
What we hold. Two short reports, published eight minutes apart on Monday 5 October. Both cite the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO). They do not agree on what it reported.
Interfax says a tanker crossing the Strait of Hormuz was hit by a munition "of unknown origin" and a fire broke out on board. It credits this to the tanker's captain, through UKMTO. Its headline says the tanker "came under a strike". Its text says nobody knows where the munition came from.
Shargh says UKMTO reported "2 maritime incidents" in the strait. It uses the word "incident". It does not say a ship was hit, or by what.
| Interfax | Shargh | |
|---|---|---|
| Incidents | one tanker | two |
| Ship hit | yes, by a munition | not stated |
| Fire on board | yes | not stated |
| Who fired | unknown | not stated |
| Ship named | no | no |
| Crew mentioned | no | no |
What two separate readings agree on. Neither report names anyone as firing. Both cite one agency, and they count the events differently.
What is not settled - Whether there was one incident or two. We hold only the opening lines of each report. - Who or what fired the munition. - The ship's name, flag, cargo and owner. - Whether anyone on board was hurt. - Where in the strait it happened.
What this is about. A ship in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's main oil shipping lanes, appears to have been hit by a weapon. Neither report we hold says by whom.
The place. The strait is the narrow sea passage between Iran to the north and Oman's Musandam peninsula to the south. It is the only sea route out of the Gulf. Oil and gas from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iran leave by it.
How it got here. Ships in and near the strait have been hit before. In May and June 2019 several tankers were damaged in the Gulf of Oman, just outside the strait. The United States blamed Iran, and Iran denied it. In July 2019 Iran seized the British-flagged tanker Stena Impero, after Britain had detained an Iranian tanker off Gibraltar. In June 2025 Israel struck Iran and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. Iranian officials again spoke of closing the strait. For years, Iranian leaders have raised that threat whenever pressure on Iran rose.
The actors. UKMTO is a British Royal Navy office. It takes reports from merchant ships in the region and passes warnings to other ships. It records what crews tell it. It does not say who is responsible. Iran borders the strait, and its navy and Revolutionary Guard patrol it. Oman borders the other side.
What is at stake. When ships are hit here, insurers raise the cost of war-risk cover on the route, freight rates rise, and oil traders price in the chance of disruption. Those costs reach fuel prices far from the Gulf.
Where it stands. We hold two short reports. They do not settle whether there was one incident or two, which ship was hit, or who fired.
