Iran says a new US attack 'was being prepared'; Trump says he is 'in deciding mode'
Iran's military says it has information that the United States and its allies are preparing a big new attack, and that any attack would bring sustained strikes on US bases. Trump, in one Fox News interview, says he is deciding, and would 'probably be' open to meeting Iran's president in New York. Our reports carry both inside half an hour.
Two accounts, 32 minutes apart. Everything we hold was published between 13:44 and 14:16 UTC on Sunday. It does not describe the same week.
| Outlet | What it carries | Hedged? |
|---|---|---|
| Al-Monitor (Reuters) | Iran warns against a big new attack, "saying it had information such a move was being prepared" | Yes — Iran's claim, Iran's information |
| The Jerusalem Post | "any US attack would trigger sustained strikes on US bases and interests" | Yes — an unnamed military, sourced to "the report" |
| An-Nahar | Trump's options: a deal, leaving Iran to rot economically, or wiping it out | No — printed flat, no reply |
| Anadolu Agency | Trump "would 'probably be' open to meeting" Pezeshkian this week | Yes — his own hedge |
Who is quoted. Six of the 12 reports come from one Fox News interview, four carrying a single sentence of it each. None quotes an Iranian official by name, and nobody outside the two governments is quoted anywhere.
What is not settled.
- Whether an attack is being prepared. Three reports carry it, all as Tehran's assertion; none names Iran's source, and none has US confirmation.
- Whether the presidents meet. Life.ru, citing Tasnim, says Pezeshkian will attend. Nothing we hold says a meeting is arranged.
- Whether the Houthis agreed not to fight US forces. One headline says so, with no body text.
- Who fired the drones and missiles at Saudi Arabia that Reuters uses to set the scene.
What this is about. Two governments spent Sunday describing the same week in incompatible terms: Iran's military as the run-up to being bombed again, the US president as a choice he has not made yet.
How it got here. The United States and Iran have had no diplomatic relations since 1980, after the 1979 revolution and the seizure of the US embassy in Tehran. In 2015 Iran signed a nuclear agreement with the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union, capping its enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief. Trump withdrew the United States from that deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions. In June 2025 US forces struck Iranian nuclear sites, and Iran fired missiles at a US air base in Qatar in response. That is the war the reports mean when they call anything new a resumption — Efimerida ton Syntakton's headline has Tehran saying the United States will repeat the war against it. We hold nothing from this week that dates or describes that earlier round.
Who is in it. Trump is US president. Masoud Pezeshkian, elected in July 2024, is Iran's president but does not command its armed forces; Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei does, through a command that includes the Revolutionary Guard. The Houthis are the Yemeni movement that holds Sanaa and has fought US forces in the Red Sea. The UN General Assembly's leaders' week opens in New York this week, and it is the one place both presidents are expected in the same city.
What is at stake. Iran's threat is not to US territory but to US bases and interests across the region, which puts the Gulf states that host them in it. Reuters sets the warning in a region already on edge after drone and missile strikes on Saudi Arabia.
Where it stands. No decision has been announced, and no meeting has been arranged in anything we hold.
