Iran's Guard Corps says it trapped a modern US underwater drone; a US official says an older model broke down

Eight reports on one morning at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. Four carry only Iran's account, two carry only Washington's, one carries both, and one describes an aircraft shot down instead.

Two accounts, and they do not overlap. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps navy said on Tuesday its fighters "trapped" one of "the most modern smart unmanned submarines" of "the terrorist army of America" at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. An unnamed US official told Reuters something different: an older drone suffered a technical fault more than a day earlier during a survey, and carried no secret sonar or radar.

The verb carries the argument. Shargh writes "taken as spoils"; Tehran Times writes "seized". The Insider hedges the verb, then keeps the claimant's adjective — "advanced" — in its own headline. An-Nahar never mentions that Iran says it holds the craft.

What is not settled. Whether anything was seized. No report we hold confirms a seizure independently of the Iranian statement. Only Shargh names a type, Dive-LD, and a year, 2025. The two reports carrying the American account are one account, not two: both quote the same official. None gives the craft's location, the fault, or where it is now.

What this is about. Iran says it captured an American underwater drone in the Strait of Hormuz. A US official says an old drone broke down. Neither claim has been confirmed by anyone else.

The strait. The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow channel between Iran and Oman that links the Persian Gulf to the open ocean. An-Nahar calls it one of the world's main sea routes for energy. Tension there matters far beyond the region, because tankers heading to Asia, Europe and elsewhere have no other way out of the Gulf.

How it got here

  • 1979–80: Iran's revolution ends its alliance with Washington. The two countries have had no diplomatic relations since 1980.
  • 2015–18: A nuclear deal limits Iran's programme in return for sanctions relief. In 2018 the United States leaves the deal and brings its sanctions back.
  • 2019: Washington designates the Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organisation. The same year, Iran shoots down a US Global Hawk surveillance drone over the strait.
  • 2022: Iran briefly seizes US unmanned surface drones in the Red Sea, then releases them.
  • Since 7 October 2023: The Gaza war draws Iran and Israel into direct strikes on each other. In June 2025 Israel attacks Iran, and the United States bombs Iranian nuclear sites.
  • Now: An-Nahar says the drone was surveying waters "linked to the war with Iran". None of this week's reports we hold says when or how the current fighting began.

The actors

  • The Guard Corps navy: a force separate from Iran's regular military that answers to the Supreme Leader. It patrols the strait.
  • The US Navy: its Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain. An-Nahar says it uses unmanned craft to survey and watch the region's waterways.

What is at stake. If Iran holds a new, working drone, it gains American technology and a public win. If the drone is old and broken, as the US official says, it gains little. Either way, each incident in the strait raises the risk for the shipping that passes through it.

Where it stands. Shargh has published photographs that it says show the craft. We hold no US statement on whether Iran has it.

The Tehran Times and Shargh carry the Guard Corps statement announcing the capture, and iDNES.cz repeats it as an Iranian claim.
