IRNA says Saudi commanders fled Taiz; France 24, LBCI and Ynet say the Houthis cut its supply road
Yemen's Saudi-backed government announced an offensive on Sunday to retake Houthi-held territory. The reports we hold disagree on who is giving ground at Taiz, on what the operation is for, and on what to call the Houthis.
The announcement. Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, announced military operations on Sunday to retake all territory the Houthis hold. An-Nahar carries his statement. Al Jazeera, Al-Monitor (carrying Reuters), France 24 and The Jerusalem Post report it.
Who is giving ground at Taiz.
| Outlet | What it says | Source it gives |
|---|---|---|
| France 24 | Houthis cut a vital supply route to "besieged" Taiz | several security sources |
| LBCI | Houthi "rebels" cut a main road and besiege the city | not in the opening we hold |
| Ynet | Houthis "only advancing", encircling Taiz | security sources |
| Asharq Al-Awsat (Saudi-owned) | Houthis took the roads south; government forces in "fierce fighting" | "reports said" |
| IRNA (Iranian state agency) | Saudi commanders and allied militias "fled" Taiz province | unnamed Yemeni news sources |
What it is for. Al-Modon's headline calls it the battle to "recover Sanaa". An-Nahar and Al Jazeera report Alimi's aim as restoring state authority over all of Yemen.
How big. Ynet, citing Reuters, says "up to 100,000" troops "may" take part. No other report gives a number.
What is not settled - Whether government forces are retreating anywhere. Only IRNA says so, and it names no source. - Who has been killed or wounded. No report we hold counts or names anyone. - The Houthi answer to the offensive. No report quotes a Houthi official on it. - The US role. The Jerusalem Post says Saudi requests for US air support were "refused twice". No other report carries it.
What this is about. Yemen's internationally recognised government, backed by Saudi Arabia, has launched a war to take back the north of the country from the Houthis, who have held it for over a decade.
How it got here. - The Houthis, a movement formally called Ansar Allah, come from Saada in Yemen's far north. In September 2014 they took the capital, Sanaa. - In March 2015 a Saudi-led coalition intervened to restore the government. The war settled into fixed front lines. Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city, has been split and partly encircled by Houthi forces since 2015. - In April 2022 a UN-brokered truce began, and the president handed power to a Presidential Leadership Council chaired by Rashad al-Alimi. The truce formally lapsed that October, but large-scale fighting largely stopped. - From late 2023 the Houthis attacked shipping in the Red Sea, saying they acted over the war in Gaza. The United States and Britain struck them in 2024. - According to Ynet, the Houthis have recently seized new ground in the south-west, giving them control over the Bab al-Mandab strait. The UN's World Food Programme warned on 2 October that renewed fighting had triggered a surge in hunger.
Who is in it. - The government sits in Aden. It includes the Southern Transitional Council, which seeks a separate south; Al-Modon reports it mobilising its supporters. - Saudi Arabia leads the air war, according to officials who spoke to Reuters. - Iran is the Houthis' political ally. Western and Gulf governments say it arms them; Tehran denies directing them. - The United States has struck the Houthis before. The Jerusalem Post reports it has declined to join this offensive from the air.
What is at stake. The Bab al-Mandab is the narrow strait between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, on the route between Europe and Asia through the Suez Canal. Whoever holds its Yemeni shore can threaten that traffic. Saudi oil sites are also in range: the Houthis say they hit Aramco facilities on Sunday.
Where it stands. The offensive was announced on 4 October. Taiz is the first contested front, and the reports we hold disagree on which side is gaining there.

What is being argued about
- Whether the Houthis are advancing on Taiz or Saudi-backed forces are fleeing it
- Whether the offensive aims at Sanaa or at all Houthi-held territory
- What outlets call the Houthis: Iran-backed, rebels, militias or Yemen's armed forces
- Whether the United States will join from the air
