Jerusalem Post says the committee bars "Arab party Ra'am"; Haaretz says it "moves to bar" and the court may reverse it
Three Israeli outlets carry the same vote a month before the election. They disagree on what the party is called, on whether the decision is final, and none of them lets anyone who was barred speak.
What happened. The Central Elections Committee voted on 23 September to disqualify Ra'am — the United Arab List — from the election for the 26th Knesset. The Jerusalem Post, Arutz Sheva and Haaretz all carry it. Arutz Sheva and Haaretz say the committee also barred MK Ofer Cassif of Hadash and Balad's Sami Abu Shehadeh; the Jerusalem Post says the Cassif decision came earlier the same day.
Where the accounts part.
| Outlet | Calls the party | Says the committee | Tells the reader what happens next |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | "Arab party Ra'am" | "bars" | nothing |
| Arutz Sheva | "Ra'am" | "disqualified" — no actor in the headline | nothing |
| Haaretz | "the UAL", "United Arab List" | "moves to bar" | "may be reversed by appeal to the High Court of Justice" |
Nobody barred speaks. In the four reports we hold, not one quotes Ra'am, Cassif, Abu Shehadeh or a lawyer for any of them. The only politician quoted is Israeli: Haaretz reports members of Yashar pressing Gadi Eisenkot to rule out a coalition with the same party after Yashar "slipped in recent polls". Eisenkot "resisted making such a declaration but said the party did not meet his coalition conditions".
Not settled. Whether the bans hold. Haaretz alone says they may be reversed by the High Court; no other report we hold mentions an appeal, and none contradicts it. We hold no vote count, no reasons given by the committee, and no word from the party or the two men.
In one line. A committee of serving Israeli politicians has voted to take an Arab party and two lawmakers off the ballot a month before a national election.
How it got here. Israel elects its 120-seat Knesset by nationwide proportional representation, so a governing majority is assembled from lists after the count. Who may stand is decided first by the Central Elections Committee, a body made up of representatives of the parties already sitting in the Knesset and chaired by a Supreme Court justice — politicians ruling on their rivals' eligibility. Under Israel's Basic Law: the Knesset, a list or a candidate can be barred for rejecting Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, for incitement to racism, or for supporting armed struggle against the state. That clause has been turned on Arab parties, and on the far right, at election after election since the 2000s, and the High Court has overturned such bans before. This is the run-up to the vote for the 26th Knesset, due next month.
The actors. Ra'am, in Arabic the United Arab List, is an Islamist party led by Mansour Abbas; in 2021 it became the first independent Arab party to join an Israeli governing coalition. Balad, which Sami Abu Shehadeh has led, is an Arab nationalist party. Hadash is a Jewish–Arab front on the left; Ofer Cassif is its Jewish member of the Knesset, which Haaretz is the only report we hold to mention. Yashar is the party of Gadi Eisenkot, a former army chief of staff now in the Israeli opposition.
What is at stake. Palestinian citizens of Israel vote, and Ra'am is one of the parties they vote for. Take it off the ballot and both their representation and the arithmetic of the next coalition change — which is why, in Haaretz's second report, the same party is being argued over as a coalition partner on the day it is being barred.
Where it stands. The committee has voted. Haaretz says the decisions may be appealed to the High Court. Nobody barred has been heard from in anything we hold.
