Kyiv names four targets inside Russia; Moscow's envoy calls it a 'campaign', with no damage figure from either
Zelensky lists an oil facility in Samara, a drone site in Oryol, a depot in Bryansk and an unnamed target at sea. Russian officials answer at the UN with a motive, not a damage report. None of the five reports we hold gives a damage or casualty figure.
What Kyiv says. President Zelensky said Ukraine struck four targets, Kyiv Post reports. The paper adds that he "did not disclose what was hit at sea or provide details about the damage." Obozrevatel's headline says Ukraine's General Staff "confirmed" it destroyed drone depots of the Russian "Rubikon" unit.
What Moscow says. TASS quotes envoy Dmitry Polyansky at the UN, who says Zelensky "sacrifices Ukrainians' security for more Western aid." A RIA Novosti headline quotes Rodion Miroshnik, who says Ukraine raised its drone attacks after an EU loan.
| Outlet | Whose account | What it names | A figure? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kyiv Post | Zelensky | 4 targets: sea, Oryol, Samara, Bryansk | No |
| Obozrevatel | General Staff | drone depots, control points | No |
| Censor.NET | its own | concrete shelters in Nizhnekamsk | distance only |
| TASS | Polyansky | a "campaign of strikes" | No |
| RIA Novosti | Miroshnik | more attacks after the EU loan | No |
How the words differ. Obozrevatel's headline says the General Staff "confirmed" a strike that only the General Staff reports. TASS calls Ukraine's government a "regime" in its own words, not inside a quote.
What is not settled - Whether any target was hit, or how badly. No report we hold gives damage. - What was hit at sea. Zelensky did not say. - Whether attacks rose, and by how much. RIA's headline gives no figure, and we hold no text beneath it. - Casualties on either side. None of the five reports gives a number.
This story is about Ukraine's drone and missile strikes on targets deep inside Russia, and how each side describes them.
How it got here. Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and backed armed separatists in the eastern Donbas region the same year. That was the start of the war. In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion, which Moscow calls a "special military operation". Since then the war has been fought along a long front line in Ukraine's east and south, and in the air.
Russia has struck Ukrainian cities and power stations with missiles and drones throughout. Ukraine has built up its own long-range drones and has used them to strike inside Russia. The targets it names include oil refineries and depots, airfields and drone bases. Kyiv argues that oil pays for Russia's war and that the bases launch attacks on Ukraine. Moscow treats the strikes as attacks on Russian territory.
Who is involved. Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and its General Staff announce the targets they say were hit. Russian diplomats raise the strikes at the United Nations, where Russia holds a permanent seat on the Security Council. The European Union is one of Ukraine's main financial backers and has lent it money. Russian officials link that money to the strikes.
What is at stake. For Ukraine, strikes far behind the front are a way to raise the cost of the war for Russia without taking new ground. For Russia, the strikes test whether it can protect places far from the border, such as Tatarstan on the Volga. For both, the UN is where each side argues that the other is escalating.
Where it stands. On 1 October, during the UN General Assembly's annual session, Kyiv listed new targets and Russian officials accused it of a strike campaign. Neither side has published damage figures in any report we hold.
What is being argued about
- Four targets Zelensky says Ukraine struck: Oryol, Samara, Bryansk and the Black Sea
- Ukraine's General Staff on drone depots of Russia's 'Rubikon' unit
- Russian officials at the UN linking the strikes to Western aid and an EU loan
- Concrete shelters in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan
