What happened. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, envoys for US President Donald Trump, arrived in Ukraine on 6 September and discussed conditions for ending the war with Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukraine's negotiating team, Ukrainska Pravda reports. It was their first visit. Ukrainska Pravda calls it an attempt to restart talks stuck for half a year. Kyiv Post says the envoys met Vladimir Putin and Zelensky back to back.

Where it comes from. Six of the twelve reports we hold rest on one Zelensky interview with Axios. Each lifts a different sentence from it.

Not settled: whether Moscow moved. Every account of what Russia will accept reaches a reader at three removes — Zelensky, on what the envoys told him, on what Russia told them. No report we hold quotes a Russian official on the visit. Obozrevatel alone carries the Ukrainian official Palisa saying Putin demands all of Donetsk region by the end of 2026, and that Russian commanders asked to move the deadline to March 2027. No other report we hold mentions a deadline.

What this is about. Whether the United States can restart talks to end Russia's war on Ukraine, and what each side would accept.

How it got here. - 2014. Russia annexed Crimea. Fighting began in the Donbas, the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, between Ukrainian forces and armed groups backed by Moscow. - February 2022. Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Moscow calls it a "special military operation". Kyiv and most Western governments call it a war of conquest. - September 2022. Russia declared four Ukrainian regions part of Russia: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. Most states do not recognise the claim, and Russia does not control all of that land. - January 2025. Donald Trump returned to the White House, promising to end the war quickly. - February 2026. US-brokered talks stopped, Ukrainska Pravda reports. Before this trip, Steve Witkoff had met Putin six times and Jared Kushner had met him twice, the same outlet says. Neither had been to Kyiv before 6 September.

Who is involved, and why. - Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, holds much of Ukraine's east and south. It has not publicly set out its terms on this visit in any report we hold. - Ukraine, led by Volodymyr Zelensky, is defending the rest. Obozrevatel reports Zelensky saying Kyiv has already made "all possible compromises". - The United States is the mediator. Witkoff is Trump's special envoy. Kushner is Trump's son-in-law. - Britain, France and Germany are among Ukraine's main backers. Their national security advisers joined the third round of talks in Kyiv.

What is at stake. - Land. Much of Donetsk region is still held by Ukraine. The Donbas question is "the question of the whole war", Zelensky told the Financial Times, as quoted by Ukrainska Pravda. - Winter. In past winters, Russian strikes hit Ukraine's power grid. Zelensky says Ukraine answered by blocking Russian oil and gas sales. The envoys' ideas reportedly cover energy sites, grain and oil and gas, but none of the reports we hold spells them out.

Where it stands. Kyiv says it is ready for three-way talks with Washington and Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not rule them out, Ukrainska Pravda reports. No date has been set.
