Kyiv Post says Russia knocked Ukrainian channels offline; RIA says four channels 'reported failures'
Strikes on Kyiv data centres on 26 September cut TV broadcasts and a public broadcaster's video player. Ukrainian outlets and an independent Russian one name Russia as the attacker. The headline from RIA Novosti, a Russian state news agency, names no one.
What happened. On 26 September, strikes on Kyiv data centres disrupted Ukrainian television, according to Ukrinform, Kyiv Post and Ekonomichna Pravda. Kyiv Post and Ekonomichna Pravda name Cosmonova as the damaged site.
Who acted. Six of seven reports name Russia or Russians as the attacker. RIA Novosti names no one. We hold only its headline, not its text.
| Outlet | Who acted | What went down |
|---|---|---|
| Kyiv Post | "Russia Knocks... Offline" | "local television broadcasts" |
| Ukrinform | "Russian strikes" (headline) | We Are Ukraine, Novyny.LIVE |
| Ekonomichna Pravda | "росіянами" (Russians) | Suspilne video player; Army TV |
| Mediazona | "Российская армия" (the Russian army) | a data centre, a pharmaceutical plant |
| RIA Novosti | no actor named | four channels "заявили о сбоях" (said they had failures) |
Who was hurt. Mediazona, an independent Russian outlet, is the only one to count people: "как минимум пять человек" (at least five) hurt in Kyiv.
The wider pattern. Only Kyiv Post calls it "an almost three-week campaign against data centers", with four hit on Wednesday. No other report we hold gives either figure.
What is not settled - Which four channels RIA means. Between them, the other reports name four outages, but not as one list. - Whether Army TV went off air because of the data-centre strike. Ekonomichna Pravda says only "Russian shelling". - Whether the Darnytsia drug plant was hit for a second time in a week. Only Ekonomichna Pravda says so.
What this is about. Russian strikes on Kyiv on 26 September damaged buildings that house the computer servers Ukrainian TV channels use to broadcast.
How it got here. Russia and Ukraine have been at war since 2014. That year Russia annexed Crimea and backed armed separatists in the eastern Donbas region. In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Since then Russia has struck Ukrainian cities from the air with missiles and drones, including the capital, Kyiv. Many strikes have hit power stations, the grid and other infrastructure far from the front line. Russia says it strikes military and military-linked targets. Ukraine says the strikes hit civilians and civilian services.
A data centre is a building full of servers: the machines that store and send out websites, video streams and TV signals. When one is damaged, everything that runs from it can go dark at once, even if the studios are untouched.
Who is involved. - Russia. Six of the seven reports we hold say its forces carried out the strikes. - Ukrainian broadcasters. Suspilne is Ukraine's public broadcaster. Army TV is a military channel. We Are Ukraine and Novyny.LIVE are national news channels. - Darnytsia, a Kyiv drug maker. Ekonomichna Pravda says its plant was struck the same morning.
What is at stake. In wartime, TV and news sites carry air-raid alerts and official instructions. Kyiv Post says attacks on data centres "could affect civilians' ability to receive critical information". If more data centres are hit, more channels could lose their signal at once.
Where it stands. On the day, Suspilne's video player was down and Army TV had paused broadcasting, Ekonomichna Pravda reports. The reports we hold do not say when service came back, or how badly the buildings were damaged.
What is being argued about
- Who the reports name as knocking the channels offline
- Which channels lost their signal, and how many
- Whether the strike was part of a longer run of attacks on data centres
- How many people were hurt in Kyiv
