What Kyiv says. Ukraine's Defence Intelligence says its operators struck the infrastructure of Russia's naval base at Novorossiysk overnight on 9 September and hit the Kalibr carrier frigate Admiral Essen, "causing a fire on the missile carrier". Ukrainska Pravda carries this in Ukrainian and English, and it rests entirely on the Defence Intelligence statement. The Ukrainian version calls the ship "enemy" in the report's own voice, not inside a quotation.

What Novorossiysk says. Six reports describe the same night with no ship and no base in them. Mayor Andrei Kravchenko declared a day of mourning "for those killed in the drone attack", cancelled entertainment events and lowered flags; Interfax, Life.ru, Regnum and RIA Novosti all carry his announcement. RIA Novosti reports a spontaneous memorial. Life.ru reports a water main repaired, with normal supply due back by Wednesday evening.

Not settled. No report we hold gives a number of dead, names anyone killed, or says who counted. None carries both the frigate and the dead. We hold nothing from Russia's defence ministry on the night, and no confirmation or denial that the Admiral Essen was damaged.

What this is about. Ukraine says it struck a Russian warship in a Russian port. The port's own city mourned people killed the same night, without saying how many.

How it got here. - 2014: Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Fighting began in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region. This is the start of the war. - 24 February 2022: Russia launched its full-scale invasion. Moscow calls it a "special military operation". The fighting has not stopped since. - Russia's Black Sea Fleet was based at Sevastopol, in occupied Crimea. After Ukrainian missile and sea-drone strikes on Crimea, Russia moved much of the fleet east to Novorossiysk. That port is on Russia's own Black Sea coast, in Krasnodar Krai. - Ukraine has since widened what it calls deep strikes on Russian soil: drones and missiles against bases, refineries and ports.

Who is involved, and why. - Ukraine's Defence Intelligence is a military intelligence service that also runs strike operations. Ukrainska Pravda says the service and other Ukrainian forces have hit the frigate Admiral Essen before: on 1–2 March 2026 and again in August. - The Admiral Essen is a Russian frigate that carries Kalibr cruise missiles. Ukrainska Pravda writes that Russia uses these missiles against Ukraine's civilian infrastructure. - Novorossiysk is a naval base, and also Russia's largest commercial port by cargo turnover, Ukrainska Pravda says. Oil and grain are shipped through it. A strike there can hit military and civilian targets side by side. - Russia's defence ministry normally reports how many drones it says it shot down. We hold no statement from it about this night.

What is at stake. Ukraine wants to push Russian ships further from its coast and cut down Kalibr launches. If a ship is disabled, fewer missiles can be fired. Russia wants to show that its ports and warships are safe, and that Ukraine is attacking Russian civilians. Each side's account serves its own case. We have no independent check of either one.

Where it stands. Kyiv says the frigate caught fire. Novorossiysk's mayor declared a day of mourning. None of the reports we hold says how many people were killed or who they were. None of them confirms or denies damage to the ship.
