Kyiv's mayor says two were hurt on the North Bridge; Vedomosti says Russia hit 'transport infrastructure'
Russia struck Kyiv's North Bridge for a second day on 4 October, during a visit by Germany's chancellor. One report gives an injured count: two people, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. The Russian reports we hold give none.
What happened. Kyiv Post, Vot Tak and Espreso TV report that the North Bridge was hit again on 4 October. Espreso says the strike hit the road surface and damaged a heating main. Parts of Desna district will go without hot water for a time.
Who was hurt. Ziarul de Gardă quotes Klitschko, via Ukrinform: two people injured, one taken to hospital. No other report we hold gives a figure for the bridge.
Five accounts of one strike.
| Outlet | What it says was hit | Attacker named? | Injured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ziarul de Gardă | North Bridge | Russia | 2, per the mayor |
| Kyiv Post | North Bridge, "again" | Russian forces | none given |
| Vot Tak | North Bridge, a second time | Russia | none given |
| Vedomosti | "transport infrastructure of Ukraine" | Russia's army | none given |
| Life.ru | the bridge "struck earlier" | no actor named | none given |
The timing. Vot Tak and Kyiv Post both tie the strike to Friedrich Merz's unannounced visit. Vot Tak says it came after he arrived.
Who fired. Espreso, citing Defense Express, says Russia's 50th "Varyag" drone brigade may be behind strikes on Kyiv's bridges. Defense Express itself says there is no direct confirmation.
What is not settled - Whether two injured is the final count. It is one account, from the mayor. - Which unit fired. The only evidence cited is a brigade emblem on a propaganda video. - How badly the bridge is damaged, and for how long. No report says.
This story is about a Russian strike on a road bridge in Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, and how different outlets described it.
How it got here. Russia and Ukraine have been at war since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and backed armed separatists in the eastern Donbas region. In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Its push on Kyiv failed within weeks, and the fighting settled into a long front across Ukraine's east and south. Since then Russia has struck Ukrainian cities from the air with missiles and drones, including power stations and other infrastructure. Ukraine has struck targets inside Russia.
Kyiv sits on both banks of the Dnipro river, and a handful of bridges carry traffic between them. The North Bridge is one. Espreso TV reports that Russian channels had already published video of a strike on another, the Southern Bridge. Citing President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kyiv Post reports that Russia launched over 1,900 strike drones and 25 missiles at Ukraine in the past week.
The actors. Russia's armed forces carry out the strikes. Kyiv's city government, led by Mayor Vitali Klitschko, reports the damage and the injured. Germany is one of Ukraine's largest backers. Its chancellor, Friedrich Merz, arrived in Kyiv on 4 October. Citing Reuters, Vot Tak says Germany plans 1.35 billion euros for Ukraine's energy sector and defence.
What is at stake. If the river crossings are hit again and again, a city of millions loses the routes between its two halves. Espreso reports that this strike also cut hot water to a district. Defense Express asks whether the strikes are systematic, the work of one dedicated unit. It cannot yet answer.
Where it stands. The bridge has been hit twice in two days. Life.ru reports long traffic queues at it afterwards. No report says how bad the damage is or how long repairs will take.
What is being argued about
- Whether the North Bridge strike hurt anyone, and who says so
- A named bridge versus 'transport infrastructure' in a Russian report
- The strike's timing during the German chancellor's visit
- Which Russian unit may be striking Kyiv's bridges
