Le Figaro leads the Pope's Élysée speech with 'euthanasie', iDNES with a 'paradise of machines' and a nuclear-weapons ban
Pope Leo XIV spoke at the Élysée beside Emmanuel Macron on the first day of his first visit to France as pope. All three reports we hold on the speech say he defended the right to life, and two tie that to France's new assisted-dying law. Only the Czech paper iDNES says he also warned about AI and called for a ban on nuclear weapons.
What all three agree on. Pope Leo XIV spoke at the Élysée on Friday with Emmanuel Macron present. Le Figaro, Brussels Signal and iDNES all say he defended the right to life. Le Figaro and iDNES link it to the law France passed this year.
What led. The same speech opens three different ways.
| Outlet | What leads | AI or nuclear arms? | Word for the law |
|---|---|---|---|
| iDNES.cz | AI and a „ráj strojů“ (paradise of machines) | Both | asistovaná sebevražda (assisted suicide) |
| Le Figaro | „Euthanasie, laïcité, enseignement catholique“ | Not mentioned | euthanasie in the headline; „aide à mourir“ in the text |
| Brussels Signal | Right to life as „foundation of all other rights“ | Not mentioned | Not named; „modern ethical issues“ |
Three days or four. Brussels Signal and a Le Figaro report on Macron's gifts say four days. A Le Figaro interview with the philosopher Rémi Brague says three days, in Paris, Lourdes and Metz.
The rest of the coverage. Three other Le Figaro reports that day cover gifts, church bells and history. They do not report what he said.
What is not settled. - Whether the Pope called for a nuclear-weapons ban. Only iDNES says so. The other two do not mention it, and we do not hold the text of the speech. - How long the visit lasts. Our reports say three days in one place and four in another. - What exactly he said about the law. We hold no direct quotation from the speech.
What this is about. The head of the Catholic Church has come to France. In a speech at the presidential palace, he took a side on a law France has just passed.
How it got here. Leo XIV was elected pope in May 2025. Born Robert Prevost in Chicago, he is the first pope from the United States. The pope heads the Catholic Church and is also head of state of Vatican City, so a papal visit is both a state visit and a pastoral one. Le Figaro calls this his first visit to France since his election. His predecessor, Francis, went to Marseille in September 2023.
France has argued about the end of life for years. The Catholic Church teaches that deliberately ending a life is wrong, even when the patient asks for it. According to iDNES and Le Figaro, France passed the law this year. Its French name is „aide à mourir“, which means aid in dying.
Who is involved. Emmanuel Macron has been President since 2017, and he received the Pope at the Élysée. France has been a secular republic since the 1905 law that separated the churches from the state. That is why commentators read the visit as a test of laïcité. Metz, one stop on the route, is in Moselle. An arrangement older than 1905 still applies there, and under it the state pays the clergy.
What is at stake. For the Church, France is a large, historically Catholic country where fewer people now practise. For Macron, hosting a pope means honouring a head of state and the faith of many voters without appearing to bend the secular rule. When a pope criticises a French law at the Élysée, both tensions are on show at once.
Where it stands. The Pope arrived on Friday, 25 September. Le Figaro's interview names Paris, Lourdes and Metz as the stops. Our reports disagree on whether the visit lasts three days or four.
What is being argued about
- The right to life and France's new assisted-dying law
- AI and a 'paradise of machines' (iDNES only)
- A call to ban nuclear weapons (iDNES only)
- How long the visit lasts: three days or four
