Le Figaro says 176 seats to 173; the seven other reports say only "razor-thin"
Sweden's left bloc won Sunday's election and Ulf Kristersson resigned on Thursday. One report we hold gives the margin a number. The rest call it thin — and they disagree on who declared it.
The result. Sweden's left won Sunday's election, and the count finished on Thursday. Ulf Kristersson announced his resignation; Dagens Nyheter reports that Magdalena Andersson has given a victory speech.
The margin. Le Figaro is the only report we hold that puts numbers on it — "176 sièges" against 173. The other seven call it thin and stop there: "hauchdünn" in Der Standard, "razor-thin" in Politico Europe.
Who declared it. Three reports name a body. iDNES.cz credits the public broadcaster SVT, on Wednesday, on its own projection at 99 percent counted. Der Standard credits the election authority, on Thursday. Dagens Nyheter states the majority flat, crediting nobody.
| Outlet | Calls the winner | Seats | Call credited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Le Figaro | "le parti suédois de gauche" | 176–173 | nobody |
| Der Standard | "Mitte-Links-Block" | — | the election authority |
| Dagens Nyheter | "de rödgröna partierna" | — | nobody |
| De Standaard | "het linkse blok" | — | the public broadcaster |
| iDNES.cz | "středolevé opozice" | — | SVT, at 99% counted |
| Politico Europe | "Sweden's left" | — | nobody |
| HotNews.ro | "coaliția de centru-stânga" | — | the finished count |
Not settled. Whether 176–173 is right: nothing we hold corroborates or contradicts it. Whether Andersson returns: Politico Europe has her "set to return", but only after a coalition deal, and HotNews.ro says the four parties have yet to agree. Who lost ground on the right: only Der Standard says anything, and it gives a label, not a party name.
What this is about. Sweden voted on Sunday for a new parliament, the two blocs finished close enough that the result took four days to settle, and the side that lost office must now hand it to a side that has not yet agreed among itself how to govern.
How it got here. Swedish governments are built from blocs, not single parties, because no party wins a majority on its own. Magdalena Andersson, a Social Democrat, became prime minister in 2021 and lost office after the 2022 election. Ulf Kristersson, leader of the Moderates, took over at the head of a centre-right government of three parties that depended for its majority on the Sweden Democrats, which supported it from outside the cabinet rather than joining it. That arrangement was put to voters again on Sunday. Le Figaro calls Kristersson the outgoing conservative prime minister; De Standaard calls Andersson a social democrat.
Who the actors are. Kristersson, who has announced he is going. Andersson, whom four of the reports we hold name as the incoming prime minister. SVT, the state public broadcaster, whose projection is what several outlets treated as the result. And the state election authority, which counts the votes and confirms them — a different thing from a broadcaster's call, and that distinction is most of why these reports date the win to different days.
What is at stake. A government changes hands in an EU and NATO member state. But winning and governing are separate steps: HotNews.ro says four parties must now agree before there is a government at all.
Where it stands. The count is finished and confirmed. Kristersson is resigning. Andersson has made a victory speech. Nobody has formed anything.
What is being argued about
- The size of the margin, and that only one report we hold gives it a figure
- Who declared the winner — the public broadcaster on Wednesday, or the election authority on Thursday
- Whether the winner is a party, a bloc or a coalition, and what each report calls it
- Whether Magdalena Andersson is returning as prime minister or only trying to
