Le Figaro says France Inter gave in to unions and cut Charles Sapin's editorial; Libération says Sapin refused to turn it into a debate
France Inter's public radio is ending an editorial slot held by an editor of the right-wing weekly Valeurs actuelles. Two Paris papers name different actors. Le Figaro blames the station's management and the unions. Libération starts with the columnist's refusal. None of the reports we hold quotes the station or a union.
What both papers agree on. France Inter offered Charles Sapin, deputy editor of Valeurs actuelles, a debate in place of his editorial. He refused. Le Figaro and Libération both report this. They disagree on who ended the slot.
| Le Figaro | Libération | |
|---|---|---|
| Who acted | The station's management, which "cède à la pression des syndicats" (gives in to union pressure) | Sapin, who "refuse le passage de son édito en débat" (refuses to turn his editorial into a debate) |
| Unions | Named in the headline as the cause | Not mentioned |
| Source | Sapin's own account | "plusieurs sources internes" (several internal sources), none named |
| Is his exit settled? | Yes: the editorial is cut | Internal sources say his exit is "actée" (settled). The headline calls his future "en suspens" (undecided) |
The political reaction. In a second report, Le Figaro says Bruno Retailleau, leader of Les Républicains, reacted on X. He called the decision a "petit théâtre antifasciste" (a little anti-fascist theatre).
Whose voice is missing. Sapin and Retailleau are the only people named and quoted. None of the three reports quotes France Inter's management or any union.
What is not settled. - Whether unions pressed for the change. Only Le Figaro's headline says so, and we hold no union statement. - Which came first, the decision to end the editorial or Sapin's refusal. - Whether Sapin leaves the station altogether. Libération's headline says it is undecided, and its internal sources say it is settled.
What this is about. France's main public radio station is ending a weekly editorial by a journalist from a right-wing magazine, and the right says this proves public radio is not plural.
How it got here. France Inter is the flagship station of Radio France, the state-owned radio group. It has been publicly funded since it was created. In 2022 the licence fee was abolished, and public broadcasting is now paid for from the state budget through a share of VAT. Because the public pays for it, French law requires it to be pluralist and neutral. The regulator, Arcom, checks that it is.
For years, politicians on the right have said France Inter leans left. In 2024 the Conseil d'État, France's top administrative court, ruled that Arcom must assess pluralism across the whole of a channel's output, not only speaking time for politicians. That ruling made the argument sharper. In September 2025, a secretly filmed conversation between two public-radio journalists and Socialist Party officials was published. The right cited it as proof of bias. The journalists denied any wrongdoing. Giving editorial slots to right-wing voices is one of the ways the station answers the charge.
Who is involved. - Charles Sapin is deputy editor of Valeurs actuelles, a weekly news magazine on the right. He held the editorial slot. - France Inter's management runs the schedule and is answerable to Radio France. - The station's unions, which Le Figaro names as the source of pressure. - Bruno Retailleau, leader of Les Républicains, the main centre-right party. He was interior minister from 2024 to 2025.
What is at stake. If a right-wing columnist's slot on public radio can end after internal pressure, the right will say pluralism rules are not working. If he left because he refused the format he was offered, it is an ordinary scheduling dispute.
Where it stands. As of 19 September 2026, the station has not given its account in any report we hold.
What is being argued about
- Whether France Inter's management gave in to union pressure or Sapin walked away from a debate format
- Pluralism on publicly funded radio
- The Les Républicains leader's attack on the station
- Unnamed internal sources and a station that has not spoken
