Libération says the Houthis seized Bab el-Mandeb; Reuters says they are still advancing on it
Libération's headline says the strait has been taken, but its own first line names only one island in it. Reuters, six minutes earlier, says the Houthis are still advancing and credits unnamed sources. None of the three reports gives a casualty figure.
The disagreement. Libération's headline says the Houthis "s'emparent du détroit de Bab el-Mandeb". Reuters published six minutes earlier. It says they "continuent d'avancer vers le détroit" and credits unnamed sources.
| Outlet | Time (UTC, 11 Sep) | What it says | Source given |
|---|---|---|---|
| Al Jazeera English | 14:07 | "the Houthi-Saudi fight escalates" | none in what we hold |
| Reuters | 14:08 | still advancing towards the strait | unnamed "sources" |
| Libération | 14:14 | strait seized; Perim island taken on 10 September | none named |
What was taken. Libération's own first line is narrower than its headline. It names one place: Perim island, also called Mayyun, "au cœur du détroit". It calls this "un revers majeur pour l'Arabie Saoudite" in its own voice. It names no one as saying so.
Who is heard. Libération's headline says the Houthis give assurances that they do not threaten international trade. The part of its report we hold quotes no Houthi statement. Al Jazeera English tells the fighting through Pakistan, which it says "faces growing pressure to honour its Saudi defence commitments". It names no source for that.
Who is missing. None of the three reports gives a casualty figure. None quotes a Saudi official, a named Houthi spokesperson, or anyone living near the strait. We hold no Yemeni or Saudi outlet on this.
Not settled. - Whether the Houthis hold the strait, or one island in it. - Whether anyone was killed or hurt. - What the Houthi assurance on shipping says, and who gave it.
What this is about. Who controls Bab el-Mandeb, the strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa that every ship passing between the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea — and on to the Suez Canal — must sail through.
How it got here. The Houthi movement, which calls itself Ansar Allah, took Yemen's capital Sanaa in September 2014 and pushed out the internationally recognised government. In March 2015 a coalition led by Saudi Arabia began a military campaign to restore that government. The war has run since. Yemen's Red Sea coast — the port of Mokha, the town of Dhubab, and the island of Perim, also called Mayyun — lies on the Yemeni side of the strait, so whoever holds that coast sits beside the shipping lane.
This week the fighting moved there. Al Jazeera English reports that Houthi drones and missiles wounded 73 people and set oil facilities alight in four Saudi cities on 8 September, according to the Saudi-led coalition. We reported on 10 September that the Independent said Houthi fighters had reached Mokha while Interfax said government forces had retreated from it.
Who is in it. The Houthis, whom Al Jazeera describes as Iran-backed. Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government it supports. Iran, whose influence over the Houthis one regional analyst told Al Jazeera is "significant" but "not absolute and unlimited". And Pakistan, bound to Riyadh by a mutual defence pact that also includes Turkiye; its defence minister said this week the pact "will definitely" be activated if the fighting spills further into the kingdom, while its parliament in April 2015 voted to stay neutral in Yemen.
What is at stake. Saudi Arabia's two main oil export routes — the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb — could come under pressure at once. Brent crude passed $107 a barrel on Friday, Al Jazeera reports.
Where it stands. Al Jazeera says the Houthis held all of Yemen's Red Sea coast by Friday morning, and that they have made no official announcement claiming the strait.
