The Independent says the Houthis "reach" Mokha; Interfax says government forces "had to retreat"
Efimerida ton Syntakton calls it an outright capture, in one line. Shargh says Ansarallah also took Zuqar island — no other report we hold carries that. The Jerusalem Post reports a captured laptop of Revolutionary Guard maps, on the Yemeni military's word.
The city. Houthi forces have entered Mokha, the Red Sea port held until now by forces aligned with Yemen's internationally recognised government. The Independent, using the Associated Press, has two named residents and three doctors who say they fled a seized hospital. Interfax, relaying The National, quotes a Yemeni official saying the forces left. The two sides describe the same outcome.
Four words for one force.
| Outlet | What it calls the force | What it says happened |
|---|---|---|
| The Independent | "Iranian-backed Houthi rebels" | They "reach" the city. Residents said so; the AP "could not independently verify". |
| Interfax | "хуситы" — the Houthis | Government forces "had to retreat"; "resistance forces left Mokha". |
| Efimerida ton Syntakton | "Οι Χούθι" | "Captured a strategic city and port" — stated flat, no source. |
| Shargh | "Ansarallah", the movement's name for itself | Also took Zuqar island, credited to Al Jazeera. |
| The Jerusalem Post | "a Houthi commander" | A captured laptop with Revolutionary Guard maps of the strait. |
What is not settled. Where the government troops went: only Interfax carries the regrouping at Dhubab, 46 km south, and it rests on one unnamed official. The laptop: The Jerusalem Post is the only report we hold that mentions it, and it credits the Yemeni military rather than anything it has seen. No report we hold gives a number of dead or wounded, and none names anyone hurt in the city.
What this is about. Yemen's civil war has flared again, and one side has pushed to within reach of one of the world's main shipping lanes.
How it got here. - 2014: The Houthis, an armed movement from Yemen's north that calls itself Ansar Allah, took the capital, Sanaa. The internationally recognised government was driven out. - March 2015: A Saudi-led Arab coalition went to war to restore that government. Years of fighting and air strikes followed. - 2022: A UN-brokered truce took effect. The Independent and Interfax both say it brought a relative lull, though no final peace deal followed. That April, the government handed power to a Presidential Leadership Council. - Late 2023 onwards: After the Gaza war began, the Houthis attacked ships in the Red Sea. Many shipping lines rerouted around Africa. - July 2026: Interfax reports that fighting between government units and the Houthis picked up across the country. It says the Houthis and Saudi Arabia started trading strikes again. It also says the Houthis declared a naval blockade of Saudi ships, citing a blockade of Yemeni ports and an attack on Sanaa airport. - Early September: Interfax says the Houthis opened an offensive along the west coast and hit Saudi oil sites, and that Saudi Arabia struck back.
The actors. - The Houthis hold Sanaa and much of the north. - The government is based in Aden and backed by Saudi Arabia. On the west coast its forces include units under Tareq Saleh, a vice-president of the council. - Saudi Arabia leads the coalition and is now a direct target. - Iran is widely described as the Houthis' backer. An Iranian official told The National, as relayed by Interfax, that Tehran does not control them. - Pakistan carried a Saudi message to Tehran, Interfax reports.
What is at stake. Mokha is about 80 km from the Bab el-Mandeb, The Independent says. The Bab el-Mandeb is the narrow strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. It joins the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, so ships going between Europe and Asia by the Suez Canal pass through it. Whoever holds the coast beside it can threaten that traffic. The 2022 truce is also at risk.
Where it stands. Residents say the Houthis are in Mokha. A government official, quoted by The National through Interfax, says the troops pulled back south to regroup. We hold no report of a counter-attack.
What is being argued about
- Whether Mokha was taken or given up, and which word each outlet uses
- Where Yemen's government forces are now, on one unnamed official's account
- How close the fighting brings the Houthis to Bab al-Mandab
- A single-source claim of captured Iranian plans for the strait
