Life.ru headline: Russian drones 'up to 900 km/h'; Espreso: a forecast, today's top speed is 600
A Ukrainian Air Force colonel told parliament that Russia's jet drones may reach 800–900 km/h. A Russian outlet's headline left out that this was a forecast. A Ukrainian outlet says those speeds have not been recorded.
What was said. Colonel Yurii Cherevashenko is deputy commander of Ukraine's Air Force. On 6 October he spoke to a temporary investigative commission of the Verkhovna Rada. Espreso TV quotes him: "Ми прогнозуємо збільшення швидкості до 800-900 км/год" (we forecast an increase in speed to 800–900 km/h).
Where the accounts split.
| Outlet | Headline | Body | Today's speed given? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life.ru | colonel "spoke about Russian drones that reach 900 km/h" | "в перспективе могут" (in future may) | No |
| Espreso TV | Russia "may" push drones to 800–900 km/h | a forecast; such speeds "поки не фіксували" (not yet recorded) | Yes: up to 600 km/h |
| Censor.NET | interceptors "не раніше кінця листопада" (not before end of November) | one line, on interceptors only | No |
The share of jet drones. Only Espreso TV carries these figures, quoting Cherevashenko. Jet drones are about 40% of all drones used over Ukraine. On some axes they are up to 60% of strikes. The Air Force forecasts about 80%.
The interceptors. Espreso TV and Censor.NET both say interceptors will not arrive in the numbers needed before the end of November. Both rest on the same testimony. Espreso TV says 20 companies are in contact with the Air Force and 14 are running test flights.
What is not settled. - Whether any Russian drone has flown at 800–900 km/h. Espreso TV says none has been recorded. No report we hold says otherwise. - The 40% and 60% shares come from one officer, in one report. - The November date is a forecast, not a delivery.
What this is about. How fast Russia's newest attack drones fly, and whether Ukraine can shoot them down.
How it got here. The war between Russia and Ukraine began in 2014. That year Russia annexed Crimea and backed armed groups in Donbas. Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Since 2022 Russia has struck Ukrainian cities and the power grid with long-range one-way attack drones. They are based on Iran's Shahed design, and Russia calls them Geran. Those drones have propellers and fly relatively slowly. Ukraine built much of its air defence around them: mobile gun teams, and later cheap interceptor drones that chase and ram them.
Jet-powered versions change that. A faster drone gives defenders less time to react. It can also outrun interceptors built for the older type. Espreso TV cites Ukraine's military intelligence: Russia has modified its jet "Geran-4" to hit bridges and power-line pylons more effectively.
Who is involved. - Ukraine's Air Force runs the country's air defence. It publishes the counts of what Russia launches. - The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, set up a temporary investigative commission. Espreso TV names its chair as Oleksii Honcharenko. He posted the colonel's remarks on Telegram. - Ukrainian manufacturers are building jet-drone interceptors and testing them with the Air Force. - Russian media report what Ukrainian officials say to a Russian audience.
What is at stake. Jet drones may become most of what Russia launches. If interceptors also arrive late, more drones may reach cities and the power grid as winter begins. If interceptors arrive in time, Russia's advantage may shrink.
Where it stands. On the Air Force's own account, jet drones are a growing share of attacks. Their top speed today is up to 600 km/h. Interceptors in the numbers needed are not expected before the end of November.
What is being argued about
- Whether 800–900 km/h is a speed Russian jet drones reach now or a forecast
- The share of jet drones in Russian attacks: about 40% now, forecast 80%
- When jet-drone interceptors will arrive in the numbers needed
- A headline that drops the word forecast its own text keeps
