Mash first said three dead and Baza called it a Tu-154; the ministry now says six dead on a Tu-95 and gives no cause
A Russian Tu-95 strategic bomber crashed in Amur region on 29 September. Russia's defence ministry says six of the seven crew died. The first counts, the aircraft type and the only cause in print came from Telegram channels, and the counts and the type changed before the ministry spoke.
What the ministry says. Russia's defence ministry says a Tu-95 crashed in Amur region during a training flight. Interfax and Regnum quote it as saying the plane fell "в безлюдной местности", in an unpopulated area. TASS, Regnum and Vot Tak carry the toll as the ministry's own preliminary figure: six crew dead, and one injured and in hospital. Espreso TV reports the ministry as saying the aircraft carried no munitions.
How the account moved. Espreso TV is the only report we hold that records the first versions.
| First account | Later account | |
|---|---|---|
| Toll | 3 dead, 4 injured (Mash) | 6 dead, 1 injured (Mash, Baza, ministry) |
| Aircraft | Tu-154 (Baza) | Tu-95MS (Astra, from wreckage photos); Tu-95 (ministry) |
| Cause | fuel explosion, "preliminary" (Baza) | none given (ministry) |
How it is hedged. 3 of the 9 reports that give the toll keep the ministry's "preliminary". A second Regnum report states the toll flat. Suspilne writes that the aircraft was "allegedly" unarmed ("нібито"). It states the six dead without a hedge.
Where. Regnum places the crash in Mazanovsky district. Life.ru and Obozrevatel name the village of Krasnoyarovo. Only Obozrevatel names the airfield the bomber took off from: Ukrainka.
What is not settled. - The cause. Suspilne says it is not known, and the ministry gives none. - The dead. No report names any of the six crew. - Whether the aircraft was armed. The ministry says it was not, and no report we hold checks that.
This story is about a crash that destroyed one of Russia's long-range, nuclear-capable bombers in the Russian Far East, thousands of kilometres from the front line in Ukraine.
How it got here. Russia seized Crimea and backed armed separatists in eastern Ukraine in 2014. It launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then Russia has struck Ukrainian cities and power stations with cruise missiles. Many of those missiles are launched from strategic bombers flying inside Russia, and the Tu-95 is one of them. It is a Soviet-designed propeller aircraft that first flew in the 1950s, and Russia has kept it in service for decades. It is also part of Russia's nuclear forces.
Because the bombers launch the missiles, Ukraine treats their airfields as targets. On 1 June 2025, Ukrainian drones hit bombers parked at air bases deep inside Russia. None of the reports we hold link this crash to any attack. The ministry says the plane was on a training flight.
The actors. Russia's defence ministry is the only official source. It has released a toll but no cause. Mash and Baza, two Russian Telegram channels, reported first and then changed their accounts. Astra, an independent Russian channel, identified the aircraft from photographs of the wreckage. Ukrainian outlets follow every loss of these aircraft, because they are the planes that strike Ukraine.
What is at stake. Russia no longer builds the Tu-95, so every one it loses is a launch platform it cannot replace. A technical fault would say something about an ageing fleet. Any other cause would change the story. We do not yet know which it is.
Where it stands. The ministry reports six crew dead and one in hospital. The dead have not been named. Espreso TV reports that the circumstances and the cause are being investigated.
What is being argued about
- How the toll went from three dead to six
- Whether the aircraft was a Tu-154 or a Tu-95
- A fuel explosion as the cause, credited to one Telegram channel only
- Which outlets hedge the ministry's figures, and which state them flat
