Not settled. Whether anything was agreed: no report names an agreement, and Life.ru says none was reported anywhere. Whether Zelensky refused the refinery request: The Insider is alone in saying so, about a closed-door conversation, and names nobody. Whether Moscow moved: one of six reports carries a Russian response at all.

What this is about. One forty-minute meeting between the American and Ukrainian presidents, and six reports that cannot agree on whether it changed anything.

How it got here. Russia and Ukraine have been at war since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and fighting broke out in the Donbas. On 24 February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion, and that war is still being fought. The United States has been Ukraine's largest military backer through it, which is why an American president's intentions are themselves Ukrainian news. Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025. Every September world leaders gather in New York for the opening of the UN General Assembly, and it was on the edges of that gathering, on 22 September, that Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky — Ukraine's president since 2019 — sat down.

Who is in it. Zelensky wants weapons and pressure on Moscow. Trump, Espreso's analyst says, still talks of doing a deal with Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin answers through its spokesman, Dmitry Peskov. China's Xi Jinping enters only because that analyst argues a coming Trump–Xi meeting explains the American shift.

Why a strait. The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow channel at the mouth of the Gulf through which a large share of the world's seaborne oil passes. Ukraine has been striking oil refineries inside Russia; The Insider's headline has Zelensky invoking the strait to argue that the diesel price is set there, not by Russian output — his answer, in that report, to a request to stop.

What is at stake. An energy truce would mean each side ceasing to strike the other's energy sites; Espreso reports Zelensky offering one if Russia reciprocates. Absent that, the levers named in the reports are American: missiles and anti-missile defence for Ukraine, and the Russia sanctions bill carrying the names of Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal.

Where it stands. Nothing signed. The Kremlin, in the one report that carries it, says the conditions for talks do not exist and wants expert-level work before any summit.
